They say you should not judge a book by its cover, but when we are talking houses, things tend to change a little bit. When you first arrive at someone’s house, your attention is caught by what the house looks like on the outside. Sadly, homeowners tend to get so wrapped up in interior design, that they forget to take care of the exterior as well.
You don’t need to go overboard with renovations and change the aspect of your house entirely, but there are some small improvements you can make to breathe fresh life into your home’s exterior and bring back its charm. We have put together a list of 7 adjustments you can make to your home’s exterior, to enhance its appearance.
Upgrade your front door
If your front door is looking a bit old and unappealing, it may be time you consider changing it. This will help make your house look much more appealing from the first moment people see it. Before choosing a door, think of the overall aspect you want the exterior of your house to have so that you can start deciding on colors and materials.
Now, there are many types of exterior doors you can choose from, all coming in different colors and materials. Wood, composite and steel are amongst the top material choices, because of their durability and resistance to weather changes.
Apart from the aspect, a new front door will also contribute to the security and insulation of your house. If you were to purchase a composite door, for example, it’s good to know that they have good insulation properties, which will help reduce your energy bills and keep the temperature inside constant.
Bring everything to life with proper lighting
Nothing will improve the aspect of your house more than good lighting. Even though it will only be visible at night, good lighting can change the entire aspect of your yard and façade. You can place lights strategically around the house and yard, to accentuate elements you find appealing and even mask some areas that still need a little retouch.
Ground lights pointed at trees and bushes near the front door will create a more luxurious appearance and make the vegetation seem lusher. Soffit lights will help draw the attention towards the architecture of the house and will work wonders, especially if you plan on repainting the house as well.
Install some window boxes
If you want to make your windows stand out, or are simply looking for a way to add more plants to your home, window boxes are exactly what you need. They can be made out of wood, copper, or a multitude of other materials, depending on the overall appearance of your house. If you feel creative enough, you can also attempt to DIY them, as you can find a bunch of tutorials and inspiration online.
Once you have them installed, you can go ahead and plant a mix of flowers in each one of them. You can choose small colorful plants and combine them, to bring more color to the house. Another thing you can do is choose hanging plants that will create green cascades under every window. Or, by all means, go ahead and make whatever combination you like. After all, it’s your house and your creativity we are talking about here.
Give your house a full exterior repaint
If your house was not painted since the time it was built, it may be time to consider a repaint job. Exterior paint is usually durable and resistant to outside factors, such ss rain, sunlight, and winds, but in time, it starts to lose its beautiful aspect.
You can choose any type of color you want. In fact, designers recommend going for bold colors this year, to really make a change. If you choose to stick with white or more neutral colors, you can add some color accents around doors and windows to make everything seem brighter. White with bold accents is actually one of this year’s trends.
Other exterior paint color trends this year include butter yellow, off-white shades, sky blue, spearmint and gray. Keep in mind that, if you choose a more vibrant color, you should stick to more neutral doors and windows, to balance things out.
Plants, plants, plants
I can not stress enough how important plants are. If you can, I recommend filling your entire yard with colorful flowers, bushes, and trees. There is just something about flowers that makes people happier. If you only have a few plants around, consider extending your flower garden with some easy to maintain flowers and shrubs.
Again, you can let your creativity shine and play with colors, heights, and shapes. Mix things up and plant flowers that bloom in various periods of the year, to have a full garden year-round and make it seem like it’s always Spring in your home.
You can even go ahead and place some large potted plants near your front door, to frame it and make it look more alive. Really, when it comes to plants, there are little limitations to what you can do. You just need to ensure you remember to water them from time to time.
Reorganize your front yard
If you were blessed with a big front yard, please don’t just cover it in concrete and call it a day. There are other materials that can be used for patios, such as pavers, gravel and clay bricks. They will make the yard feel homier and less like a commercial building.
Also, it may be a good idea to plant a few trees as well. Once they grow, they will help bring some shade into the place, which you will be grateful for during hot summer months. You can also hang little lights on them, to make the place look even more warm and cozy.
Last, but not least, remember to tend to your lawn every one in a while. While we like lush vegetation, an untrimmed lawn looks extremely unappealing.
