Free Lunch Program For Charlotte-Mecklenburg Students While Schools Are Closed

The Loyalist Market in Matthews has teamed up with a number of other Charlotte businesses to provide free lunches while Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools (CMS) are closed due to the COVID-19 crisis. All K-12 schools across North Carolina  are now closed for at least two weeks. Sadly, many children in the CMS school system receive free meals at school and are affected by these school closures.

In conjunction with other Charlotte area businesses, the Loyalist Market’s owner, Christopher Sottile has organized a drive to provide a free sandwich to any child currently receiving free lunches in the North Carolina school system, beginning today, March 17th through March 30th. The goal is to serve some 3,000 lunchesbetween today and March 30th.

There are 14 locations serving some 700 children per day. It's hoped that with contributions, eight more locations will be available by Wednesday this week. For more details on the lunch program, click here on The Loyalist Market's Facebook page.

The Loyalist Market has also put out a call for drivers... if you can help please let them know.

Sam Shueh thanks, Sam... the impact of school closures on food-insecure children in our county is huge, unfortunately.

Barbara Todaro hi Barbara... not much we can do but take it one day at a time and contribute to and help our neighbors as we can.

Nina, it is wonderful to see these programs continue even though school is closed.  Ours are doing the same.

Joan Cox hi Joan... the key thing about the food programs happening in Charlotte is that they are all driven by private citizens and local businesses... nothing coming out of the school system... they simply shuttered everything.

Nina this is good information to post.  I am sure in the coming weeks many are going to be in need of these programs.

Morning Nina.

All the schools in the state are shut down.  However, they are still open to provide breakfast and lunch to the students

I'm so proud of our community, Nina! People are coming together like I haven't seen since hurricane Hugo. These are stressful times for everyone but, one sure way to get through this is by giving of ourselves to others - it works wonders for everyone

George Souto good morning, George... I suspect that in coming days, weeks, and months we will be seeing an awful lot of need out there. It's really quite frightening in some ways.

James Dray hi James... Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced two days ago they would open some 70 locations to provide meals to students who need them. Personally, don't know why it took them so long to make that announcement.

Debe Maxwell, CRS good morning, Debe... it really is heart-warming to see neighbors stepping up to the plate with offers of help. Then again, I've always said that I believe deep down people are kinder than we often give them credit for being.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 good morning, Sheila and Larry... hard to really wrap one's mind around about how these unexpected school closures are impacting food-insecure kids in our area... and we have way too many of them, in any event.

Roy Kelley hi Roy... while I think it's wonderful that thousands of kids get fed in our respective towns... it still upsets me that so many need to be fed.

I agree with you. It is a shame that so many children rely on the food they receive at their schools.

I love seeing these programs!  A friend of mine is the superintendent for an elementary school district in a poor area and her district is loading up busses with lunches and delivering them to the students each and every day.

Roy Kelley hi Roy... it's unimaginable that a country so wealthy as ours and one that produces so much food has hungry children (and seniors).

Brian England hi Brian... these kinds of outreach program in times of crisis are so important... but it's also a shame that they are needed to the extent that they are.
