Now That We’re All Working from Home

In most cases, sheltering in place means you’ll be working from home. For many, it’s going to get old rather quickly. But, look on the bright side (and there is one). There are many benefits to working from home.

Work in Your Jammies – No shower. No problem. Make your phone calls, stay in touch digitally, and catch up on the administrative tasks you can’t seem to find time for. No one will know what you’re wearing. Nor do they care.

No Traffic Jams – How long does it take to drive to work? Now you can smile at the time and gas you’re saving.

Stay Calm – Working from home gives you the opportunity to do your work at your leisure. That’s not to say to put things off to the last minute. It just means you can work in a calmer setting with fewer interruptions.

Walk Away – When the work you’re doing gets frustrating or when there are too many distractions, walk away. Go outside for a few minutes. Read a comforting article. Talk a walk.

Promote Your Business – How lucky are we that we have so many online tools at our disposal? Create promotional marketing pieces. Stay in touch with contacts using social media and email. Use Facetime. Create virtual tours, quick videos, go live on Facebook. The options are endless.

Take an Online Course – Looking to improve your skills? There are tons of online courses for both business or leisure.  OpenCulture.com offers free courses from a variety of universities.

Set Your Own Schedule – As long as your work gets done, it doesn’t matter if you do it between 9 and 5, 7 and 9 or while the kids are down for a nap. The point is that you can set your schedule to accommodate your lifestyle.

With so many promotional options at your disposal, you will be able to keep your business moving forward – even if you’re working at home.

Hi Pamela... I've worked from my home office for 20 years. Here are my rules:

1. Have a set schedule for work... none of this flex time.

2. No jammies, no going without a shower. Showered, hair and make-up done and dressed professionally before I ever sit down to work in my office. I don't work well without having my game face on.

3. As for the traffic jams... this hasn't been a reality of my life since I retired from the corporate world in 1989! :)

Hi Pamela Cendejas - all those are true although I seem to be busier than ever between online takes and online meetings.

Doing my best to stay focused and on task but I do enjoy the constant reminders of kiddos home from school. I'll take my lunch break snuggles as the greatest benefit.

Krystin Mitchell, CPA CFE - Technology has evolved so much since my kids were little. It's great that you get to enjoy your family and career at the same time. I've always felt that as long as everything gets done in a professional manner and on time, that's what matters. Although I am have always set up strict hours of operation and worked accordingly.  Thank you for sharing your experience.

I agree with Nina Hollander that it's best to get up and dress for work, but it doesn't always work that way for me. I come down to my office early and check my mail, and sometimes there's a message from a client in Florida who needs something "for morning." Because her morning is 3 hours earlier than mine, when that happens, I start work in my bathrobe.

Also, since interruptions do happen, I sometimes come back to work after dinner at night.

Marte Cliff - You've just described the beauty of working from home. You and I are lucky that most of our interactions are online. I do get ready in the morning as if I'm going to work. I just don't have to wear heels.

Hi Pamela Cendejas, super post! From reading the other comments, it seems we all develop our own rhythms and strategies when working from home, which of course is one of its great advantages.

Lots to enjoy about working from home, I live near Valley Forge Park, so I can walk out my front door and be among the trees in minutes, listening to the sound of the creek flowing over the stones and relax, then return and get back to it.

Great post!  Having worked from home for the last 15 years I can attest to all the nuiances.  I love the fact that I get more done, drink my own brand of coffee, listen to music in the backgrounds, and walk around my house talking to clients.  Walking and smiling help a conversation go smoothly and it gives me a lift!

I've been working at home since I got my license in 2006. I could still meet clients at the office. I can get a lot done while watching a real estate video tutorial. I also don't have to worry if someone is at the printer. I have my office combo fax printer and computer and ready to go for the past 14 years. I also get dressed and ready for the day at any minute to walk out the door if need be.

Agents can work from home to a certain extent.  But I see business really slowing down--when govt mandates you must stay at home, can't show homes, get inspections done, etc

Mary Hutchison, SRES, ABR - The current situation has caused businesses to slow down. It's time to get creative. What about facetime, virtual tours, marketing you haven't had time for, etc.?

We normally work from home and enjoy it. One of the big perks of being independent agents. We love setting our hours and schedule. It's important to be able to close the door and focus - I used to get distracted with life around me. No longer, it's a discipline.  Our clients are on hold - they are hopeful the self-quarantine efforts are going to help stifle the spread of the virus.  We are staying in touch and working on marketing.
