On her show, with Dr. Ian Smith, Rachael Ray explained how to make hand sanitizer at home. She included the sketches of hands showing the difference after a full 20-30 second deliberate and thorough washing - done correctly. See the video here.
Ignaz Semmelweis (1818-1865) was born in Hungary. He discovered in 1847 that childbed fever mortality rates fell ten-fold when doctors disinfected their hands with a chlorine solution before moving from one patient to another.
Unfortunately, he was unable to convince his peers to follow his successful research. In fact, his failure led to the use of the phrase "Semmelweis Reflex" or "Semmelweis Effect" to symbolize rejection of new theories due to "Mob behavior [unwilling to accept] a discovery of important scientific fact." Wikipedia
Although he made a world-changing discovery, he was not "politically" astute. Unable to get his peers to recognize the importance of his scientific research, Semmelweis fell into a deep depression and was hospitalized. Ironically, he died while hospitalized of the very cause he tried to fight. Wikipedia
Reading Semmelweis' biography led the famous psychaitrist Thomas Szasz to say that the facts impressed upon him "deep sense of the invincible social power of false truths."
