Ohio Tops for Trees

Forest with fogOhio leads the country in tree planting.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer  "Ohio, for the 26th year, has more Tree City USA communities - 249 - than any other state. Ohioans last year planted more than 35,000 trees and spent more than $36 million on urban forestry efforts."

A list of the 249 Ohio cities that are Tree City USA communities is available on the Arbor Day Foundation website.  As well as Tree City USA commuities throughout the country.

Arbor Day in Ohio is April 27, 2007.   Arbor Day ideas from the Ohio Division of Natural Resouces Division of Forestry includes "plant a tree"  of course.

You can order free trees from the Arbor Day Foundation website when you become a member.

The Division of Forestry believes Ohio's "urban forests" are the fastest increasing forested areas in the state. According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry: "America's forestry movement actually started in Ohio with the creation of the American Forestry Association in Cincinnati in 1875."

Central Ohio cities on the list of Tree City USA communities include Canal Winchester, Dublin, Gahana, Grandview Heights, Grove City, Hilliard, Powell, Upper Arlington, Westerville and Worthington.  The biggest challenge faced in Ohio forestry is controlling the Emerald Ash borer.

What was the driving force behind this effort?  Was there a serious problem at one time?

Trees are our friends? Trees are good.  I don't know if there was a serious problem, I am not that old.

Ohio was forest but it was cleared for farming when it was settled long ago. 1950's 1970's there were movements to beautfy America. Arbor Day / Tree City USA come from those efforts.

The emerald ash borer is a big problem. Two years ago when the state was cutting down trees within a half mile radius of finding an affected tree, the radius stopped at the end of my street. Our street is lined with Ash trees that are now 10 years old. We were so afraid we would lose our beautiful trees. Although, we still may, at least for now the state ran out of money, so they're not cutting everything within a given area. Last fall, we noticed city hort people checking our street trees once again. So far, no flourescent spray paint on any of them ... yet.

I attended one of the meetings the DNR held for our area. They believe the borer came to Ohio from Michigan via people transporting firewood. Amazing how such a tiny insect can do billions of dollars in damage.

Oh was Randy's question about Emerald Ash borer?  I assumed the fact that trees were being planted. I really expected no comments on this .....it's my first attempt in a loooooong time to post anything that would / could end up on Localism..

Have you noticed TV commercials about Don't move firewood lately?  I just noticed them in the past few weeks and thought it was kind of funny... end of firewood season... but maybe people camped in MI and brought a few pieces back with them. I was talking to a client with a large lot that was affected by it.

When we went to the DNR meeting 2 years ago, they offered bumper stickers with the Don't Move theme. Although winter is hopefully almost over, the public is more likely to transport firewood via camping or their RV's. When people buy firewood for their fireplace, they don't transport. The people selling that wood know the rules. Based on that, reaching the less knowledgable general public who are camping is the reason for the timing of the current ads.

Theresa... I forget now if you are Teri or Terri.... http://www.arborday.org/programs/treecity/map.cfm  I think this is the map to all the state not just Ohio... but there are more in your area than Tipp City.  Troy is.   Dayton is.  South part of town there are more, Oakwood, Kettering, Miamisburg and West Carrollton are.

I think of Westerville as a Tree City becuase I think they have some of the Tree City USA signs posted but I don't remember seeing the signs posted in Columbus or a lot of the suburbs.  Maybe they have some signs but how could cities like Columbus or Dayton put up Tree City signs at all the entrances to the city.

Life's too short.

Besides, I usually have to spend my time teaching people how to pronounce my last name-that really gives people fits!  And the maiden name, while a different national origin, was just as difficult.  (For the record, it's Loo'-shur.  Except when we talk to Montreal, then only Loo-see-ay' will do. Those French-Canadians!)

I live up in the Toledo area and we have had quite a bit of communication about not moving wood.  This really is a big concern that the ash trees will vanish because of the borer.  Similar situations have destroyed other tree species.

I'm sure it is a much bigger concern in your part of the state Patrick.

When I was a kid I remember Dutch elm disease kiliing trees in Chicago and Milwaukee.  Huge shade trees, I found a website once that showed the streets before they had to take down all the elms and after, what a difference.

Teri I must have read your comment but it did not register because I was on Bloodhound Blog wondering about the pronunciation of your name.
