TIME WAS NEVER FREE (free-time)

Take moment now that we are in a forced pause and consider a few things. First, what was it like ages ago when there was no technology and life consisted of keeping the same hours as the sun i.e. from dawn till dusk and making that time count. There were no stores to visit to stock up on anything so your day was an essential time to set-up and protect your ongoing life-style whatever that was

IT EVEN EXISTS TO THIS DAY

Life on a farm especially one that is self-sufficient and reliant has the people who live on the farm busy non-stop assuming you have a fully functional, well-rounded operation. Your home, barn, corral and storage shed was on acreage consisting of space for animals, crops and the alternating of the system that never sleeps

WHAT LITTLE I KNOW

Animals keep a different life cycle than we do. They are in step with morning and night accordingly. Hens lay eggs all over if not confined thus gathering those eggs is a constant. Cows need to be milked twice a day. Fields need to be attended to for their crop, pruning, weeding, watering and protection constantly

CHORES GALORE

With all the main duties come sub-duties of all sorts making for a full day with non-stop meaningful steps that sort of rotate and repeat making the farm functional and productive. The inside work of cleaning, cooking, canning, storing, preparation, clothing, misc repairs never come to an end except for that day.

REWARDS?

Being self-sufficient is very satisfying to an individual. Why? It is the return that comes from using your skills bank to produce an end result. It is all done under your supervision. There is no one to blame, plenty to get done and this mindset promotes a healthy existence and life-style. We can add to it here and there too

FRESH PIE OH MY

Baking a pie from scratch requires time and materials in the now to pay-off handsomely in the future. Some people have to store and lay-up firewood for a cozy and functional evening as well. Working from sun-up to sun-down activates all our energy banks thus creating two things: 1. a good appetite 2. a goods night rest

HEALTH WAS GUARANTEED

Assuming you were fully operative with no disadvantages or issues the farming/ranching life kept one in top physical, mental and psychological strength. Fat? Laziness? Diabetes? Using what we have been given in a wise and correct way promotes health and well-being automatically. Humans must be actively active

DIVERSIONS WERE HEALTHY

Going to a dance, movie, a nieghbor or a gathering was the other fun part. It gave rest, promoted interpersonal contact and let one gather perspective before returning to their commitments. This type of living demanded much from those that worked it but gave back as well. Being grateful, simple and appreciative is very rewarding

CONFINEMENT is PUNISHMENT

Being inactive, confined or not using ones abilities is a form of punishment and it punishes well. Test it yourself. Is your routine interrupted? Are you finding yourself with lots of time and nothing to fill it with? Here, we are introduced to the balance of it all where time can be productive or healing & meditative too

HELPING OTHERS

There is something about helping another that exceeds words and deeds and is so fulfilling to both the helper and the helpee. Here again is a good use of time and it also serves as an anti-selfishness tonic too of which we all can use more of. Whether conditional or not giving promotes healing in many ways for us all

AMERICA IS ON PAUSE

We now find ourselves back to where we started which is with lots of time on our hands. Time to explore, adventure, further interests, personal endeavors and reflections plus investing and setting up what is to come in a responsible way. Welcome and use this time wisely and make the most of it while you can

What can we do for you today?

Thank you for sharing this with us. My thoughts are that it was more than likely a much slower lifestyle back in the day. I do remember not having a cell phone and no such thing as the internet. My grandmother had a large garden, my mother did not, we lived in the city, my grandmother in the country. Thankful for what we have and will say thank you more than anything else. I have learned a lot in this very interesting time of life.

Peace be with you.

I do like working in the garden and making pies!  I always think it is a miracle when either one turns out right.  It is good that we have time to get back to some of the basics and help those that need it.

Raymond Henson, SRES, GRI ...I made a multi-berry pie single crust folded over the other day using natural jam as a sweetener and farina as a binder. It bubbled, cooled and then set. I sliced a good "hunk" of it. Pastry type crust followed by a very berry reward. I sometimes add some milk for a pie stew. Life is good if we give-in to it. Taking some time out to check on the other guy is rewarding for we all got to here with the help of another. Thanks for visiting

We are looking forward to some better weather to get outside and tend to our yard and our gardens. Bernie has some veggies started in cold frames, but we need a little warmer temps before we can really get the planting going strong.  Looking forward to it - and I may bake a pie this week. Thank you for the inspiration. D

Hello Richie - I was trying to remain focused on your post and then you sent a brief notice of "pie".  Yes, I became distracted.  Once again.  Just like that - easy as pie - or so it seems.

Though my mom grew up on a farm in Michigan I grew up in a military family, moving a lot. I became a beach girl, so to speak, since we lived in many coastal areas. I've always been drawn to farm/ranch life, however. I ranch sat for a month while living in Colorado. Good thing they had ranch hands to take care of everything! Always moving I feel my natural energy is to be on the move. However, I appreciate being home and your blog post. Oh...I've always favored pies to any other dessert. Nice description. Sounded yummy.

The simple life is a good life.

A very enjoyable post Richie Alan Naggar . Although I never lived on a farm I have worked on a ranch in the past and of course I did marry the farmer's daughter.
