Shout Out to Yankee Ingenuity in these Disjointed Times
Lise Howe shows us a great example of the kinds of things people do in times of dismay. It is always wonderful to see such kindness.
Hand sanitizers have been missing from the shelves of the local grocery and pharmacy stores for several weeks now, depriving vulnerable populations of access to this important commodity. Realizing that they could help fill that void, four Montgomery County distilleries, two wineries and one compounder pharmacist have abandoned making beverages and began making 85 percent proof alcohol that's needed for producing hand sanitizer.
The Montgomery County police officers and staff at the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation got the first batch of locally made hand sanitizer. The four area distilleries, two wineries and one compounder/pharmacist are working together to produce 300 gallons of hand sanitizer each week. The county police, fire and rescue services, health and human services, department of correction and rehabilitation, county sheriff's office and Montgomery County Department of Transportation will be sharing in this new source of hand sanitizer.
This is a great story of people coming together to support Montgomery County's first responders and collectively protect county residents. Department of General Services Chief Operating Officer Jamie Cooke said batches will be made every week and delivered to "public-facing" county employees.
Once the public facing county employees are protected, the hand sanitizer product will be shared with local hospitals and other county organizations.
Participating distilleries are:
- Twin Valley Distillers – Rockville, MD
- MISCellaneous Distillery – Mt Airy, MD
- McClintock Distillery – Frederick, MD
- Lost Arc Distilling Company – Columbia, MD
Participating wineries are:
- Black Ankle Vineyards – Mt Airy, MD
- Windridge Vineyards – Darnestown, MD
Participating pharmacy is:
- Vashan Compounding Pharmacy – Gaithersburg, MD
This is just one example of how people and businesses are working together to protect the public service sector and other people who are particularly vulnerable during this health crisis. People across America are making similar contributions! Thanks!
