5 Tips For Working From Home

Real Estate Agent with Juice Homes, LLC Lic# 491811

Social distancing and self isolation can be hard, especially after finding out that the shelter in place will be extended for longer than we expected. Many Americans have recently begun working from home as coorporate offices close and send employees home. Major employers like Indeed we heard supplied funding to their new remote workers to help set up home offices!

"Why is human distancing and self isolation so important? It works! If we stop and slow the spread of this virus, we can allow those who do get seriously ill to have access to urgent medical care. If the system gets over-run, we could repeat what Italy is experiencing and we KNOW this can be avoided. Please know that by staying at home and by staying isolated for the next few weeks you will play a critically important role in SAVING LIVES: This should be the ultimate motivation." - Chief Evangelist Leonard Steinberg from Compass

Check out a few tips below to find out how to make working from home easier.

1. Location, location, location

I know that as a real estate agent this is the number one priority with my clients. The same applies for the office desk space! Find yourself an area to work where you can associate your job.

2. Bring The Outdoors In

Now is a great time to bring the outdoor indoors! Creating a comfortable ambiance is key to having your business become more successful. (Don't forget to pick up your plants from the office in order to keep them alive and well)!

3. Repurpose Your Commute

A major perk of being at home is not having to sit in traffic! Use this time to workout, go on a hike, or a run! I love to bring my pet with me, because not only am I getting a great workout in, but so is my dog. Lots of our pets are definitely enjoying the working from home concept.

4. Show Your Face

Video communication is a great way to reconnect with clients, family, and friends. This helps create a social environment even if you are feeling alone. My team members at Juice Real Estate uses Zoom for conference calls, BlueJeans, Skype, Lifesize, or Facetime! This is a great tool to interact amongst others.

5. Create Lists

Everyday, create a list of what you would like to do by the end of the day! It is extremely helpful being able to feel productive and crossing things off.

Hello John - I tend to be a list-maker so crossing off items/tasks has been a longtime favorite task.  Yes, simple pleasures are a part of working wherever the desk(or the command center) is located.

Re-purposing our thought process is a part of that too so rethinking our commute throughout the day becomes important.

Carol Williams - I think John's post is a good candidate for SCS Second Chance Saturday.

Congatulations on having your very timely post featured!    These are good points - I just asked our admin to water my office plants next time she is there.    I want to redo the bookshelf in my office so it looks more professional for zoom / facetime meetings.     I'd never heard of BlueJeans - have you used it?

Our Compass Austin Office has been using BlueJeans for many of our weekly meetings!

Enjoyed your post about working from home John Dunham ... I have been doing the At Home thing since 1983 when I had my first child. I had to leave my outside job and started an at home business. Did that for 18 years and then got married to my husband who had just started his own brokerage (3 months earlier). Although we had an office I worked an office at home and in the office. Since 2009 when the market fell -- we CLOSED the brick and mortar office and I went back to full time in the home.  I love it and may never change!!! Thank you for your tips!  You are right on!

Our company is all about work-from-home even before this current pandemic. So I do agree about everything you said. I love not having to commute on a regular basis. When I lived in NY and worked in corporate America, 2-3 hours a day was spent commuting. I'm so glad I'm no longer doing that.

Absolutely and not dealing with traffic is another benefit amongst all of this. Thank you for sharing.

Great tips. Working from home is our normal routine, however, the ability to get out and about has greatly diminished. The only time we leave is to pick up groceries, curbside. Walks/runs are now close to home instead of trails. Fortunately, I'm a big believer in bringing the outdoors in, and our home reflects our natural surroundings. Nature is a great soother for our souls.

Nature is something I do not take for granted - a soother for the soul indeed.

Great tips, John, especially for those who have not been used to it. I've been working at home since moving from Boston to Carlsbad in 2005 - it took some adjusting at first but I quickly learned to enjoy it. I just have to watch the distractions!

I am loving not having to commute anywhere, John! Although I'm an on-the-go person and love every minute of it, this has become a nice, extended stay-cation and I'm getting SO much work done!!

Thanks for this, John - great tips.

Hi John Dunham,

Happy Easter! I have an office area at home ... so the only change I have had to make was to wear earbuds more.  Between regular calls and video conference calls (especially video calls), I have had to make a change.

Great list of itmes.  I love my space as it's filled with photos of my daughters in strategic places.  Since they don't live here, this is a big bonus for me.  Best of luck in this social distancing world we're in!
