I've been chatting with clients and friends over the past week and have realized how differently people respond to the threat of this pandemic affecting the entire world, not just the United States. Each conversation reminded me how at the end of the day much of life is how we look at our circumstances. No doubt the sheltering in place and social distancing most of us are doing and will continue to do in the weeks to come can feel increasingly confining and probably is "getting a bit old" for many of us. But what if instead of thinking we are "stuck" we think about the fact that we are "safe?"
I think many of us identify the word "stuck" with a certain level of negativity:
- We can be stuck in our pasts...
- We can be stuck making excuses...
- We can be stuck outside our personal and professional comfort zones...
- We can be stuck in our thinking...
... well... you get the picture... so right now maybe we can get "unstuck" from our thinking and change our thoughts to remembering that the "stuck at home" feeling could be turned into a "staying safe at home" feeling. It's always our choice how we think about things and situations.
Roy T Bennett, author of "The Light In The Heart," wrote:
“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.”
“Instead of worrying about what you cannot control, shift your energy to what you can create.”
“Life is about accepting the challenges along the way, choosing to keep moving forward, and savoring the journey.”
I couldn't agree more... our attitude is a choice and it makes little sense to worry about what we can't control. We can accept the challenges of life in a positive light and savor the journey... or we can get "stuck." The choices we make, make us. And I like to believe that choosing positivity over negativity changes my personal world for the better. I hope all who read this will think so, too. And please, don't forget to stay safe! Afterall, another word for stuck is trapped. And who really wants to be trapped?
