Beware of the grief-bacon

By
Real Estate Agent with Thompson Company, REALTORS® 240.593.2860 MD594797

If you know me, or have been following me for a bit, then you know that I'm not only fluent in Real Estate, but also in German. And if you know me and the German language, then you know that we have the best words! Long, long before Pandemic Pounds or Covid-15 became a thing, we already had a word for it:

Pandemic Pounds, Covid-15, Grief Bacon

Yes, many, if not most, are grieving the - temporary - loss of our regular routine, social interactions, and activities. It's okay, it's normal. And it's okay to not be okay at times, and to try to soothe this not-okayness with food. Just beware of the grief-bacon, it's a real thing. When we grieve, we are looking for comfort - a home cooked meal, or carry-out from our favorite restaurant can provide that comfort.

Spending so much time in our own four walls, can add fuel to the bacon - so to speak. A shortened commute to our primary food sources, the fridge and pantry, is not helpful.

So beware of the grief bacon. Step away from your fridge! Tape off the kitchen if you must. Schedule physical activity firmly into your daily agenda, it should be nonnegotiable. Walking, hiking and running have not been canceled! Use it to clear your head, or catch up with your favorite peeps. I go out twice a day - a morning walk and an afternoon activity with my children. It keeps me moving forward, literally and physically. It keeps me motivated. It keeps me focused. And it keeps the grief-bacon at bay!

Just in case you are wondering, phonetically it looks like this: koommarshpek.

If you want to hear its pronunciation, call me. If you want to find a new home in a walkable community, or close to a park to make your battle of the grief-bacon easier, call me. If you need a motivational conversation whilst you are out walking, call me. If you want to hear more about how I can still help you buy and/or sell a house, call me, Andrea Bedard, Thompson Company, REALTORS 240.593.2860.

I am available. I am here for you!

The struggle is real Michael Jacobs. I'm scheduling regularly walkie-talkies (as my daughter dubbed them) to motivate others to move (Hi Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 !) and to take my mind of things. It's working!

Barbara is such an inspiration to so many!

We MUST keep moving Barbara Todaro - I so agree! I have a work-out area set-up in my home, too, but need to get out for some fresh air and sunshine. As long as people are mindful about snacking, keep it fresh and healthy, and do some sort of exercise every day, we'll successfully counter the pandemic pounds, or the grief bacon.

Stay well!

We said Andrea Bedard -  I know German but as a second language.  I was just on Whatsapp with our friend from Bielefeld who is sheltering in place.  No question, keep that refrigerator door closed.  Get out and walk in nature.

Luckily I don't have any bacon in my home, but I have found myself snacking more than usual and I think it is out of boredom rather than hunger, haha.

Hope you, your family and German friends are all doing okay Grant Schneider ! I check in with my mom every few days, and they are hanging in there.. my dad goes on lonely bike rides and my mom spends most of the days in her garden. As long as they are outside and moving!

I've been a vegetarian since the mid-90s Brian England, so I can't remember the last time I had real bacon. But, I, too, have found myself wandering around my kitchen looking for something to munch on! Occasionally, I do give in.. need to feed my soul as well, but, for the most part, I try to stay disciplined and get moving.

OMG Grief Bacon - I love it!  It's good to take a laugh break and simply laugh a bit and/or put on the grief bacon feedbag!  LOL. Staying in a good pattern isn't easy when most are stuck at home.  Thankfully being here in PHX it's a bit easier for us as we have wide open spaces and can be out and about.  Enjoy your day!

Interesting term, thanks for sharing, seems we come up for so many ways of describing the pounds gained in comfort eating.

Dear Andrea,

Kummerspeck wegen Weltschmerz? Vielleicht besser Lebensfreude durch Trim-Dich-Fit ....

Thank you Lise Howe, am trying to stay positive and busy! Hope you are well!

You are welcome John Henry, Florida Architect - I love it, although Kummerspeck has a much better ring to it.

It is so good to take a laugh break Anna Banana Kruchten Arizona's Top Banana! and very much needed. I shared this in my newsletter last month and was thrilled to hear how it made people smile.

I have a State park right up the street from my house, and a few other recreational opportunities nearby. Sometimes I just run laps in the parking lot, just to move a bit and get fresh air.

Alan May, the struggle is real!

I've heard of a few new terms Bob Crane, and thought that this German version was good for a laugh! We all need that, don't we?

Genau Dörte Engel, Kummerspeck wegen dem zu-Hause-Frust und Weltschmerz.

You are welcome Kris Collis, Associate Broker, I wish I had thought of it! I can't take credit for it though, I only shared it.

Thank you for your words of wisdom and a reminder of a word we don't recall enough. I don't know where I first heard it - perhaps you have used it here before?

P.S. - I used to live near Silver Spring MD. I grew up in Rockville, then lived in Wheaton, then Gaithersburg, then Germantown.

I have to admit, I wasn't sure if you might be pulling our leg. But . . there it was:

kummerspeck

I'm lucky to be motivated to exercise - I've tried to keep up my regular routine and have also included two long walks a day with my husband. But definitely eating more!

Thank  you for the newfound German word!  This takes me back to my heritage a bit.  I hope not to gain the Covid-15 or fall victim to kummerspeck!
