Not the Usual Second Chance Saturday

"There is a fine line between staying well-informed and not allowing yourself to become overwhelmed, crossing the line into fear."
-Carol Williams

This is going to be a different kind of Second Chance Saturday.  I only had a couple of posts bookmarked to feature here this week so I've decided to save them until next week.

I'm trying to balance being informed and avoiding information overwhelm mode.  I am feeling fine, content to do the responsible things and stay home.

All of us in Washington State are under stay-at-home orders until May 4th. I know much of the rest of the country is too. This is a drastic change in lifestyle for all of us! We each need to figure out how to make it work for us. Here's what I am doing to make the stay-at-home situation work for me:

* Get dressed. I allow myself an hour or two to have coffee, check email, watch some news, etc before heading to the shower.  I don't allow myself to lounge around in my jammies all day just because I'm alone and have nowhere to go.  It makes me feel better and like being productive if I am up, showered and dressed like I would any other day.

* The only piece of exercise equipment I have is a treadmill. Since I can't get out to play golf or participate in other activities, I have a lofty daily step count goal for my treadmill.

* Signed up for the InstaCart grocery shopping and delivery service. I place my order online with my favorite store. They do the shopping and notify me the minute it is delivered to my porch.  It has relieved a lot of stress for me. They even found toilet paper and Albacore Tuna at Costco for me.

* Installed the Dashing Drivers app to order take-out meals delivered. Although I want to support local businesses as much as I can during this time, I'm not totally comfortable with the take-out option right now. I can't be sure under what conditions and by whom the meals were prepared.  I used it once early on and it was wonderful but I haven't used it since.  I would love to buy some gift certificates to help out these local restaurants but there has been so much talk about many of the restaurants never being able to open again. Not sure I want to take that risk.

* Cooking at home more. Other than cooking for holidays, cooking has never really been one of my favorite things to do.  Much of my social life pre-covid involved going out for a meal and/or drinks with friends. I always made a point of ordering something that would be good for leftovers. However, now I'm having fun creating some new concoctions in my InstaPot. I can't call them recipes because, mostly, I just use whatever I have in my freezer, refrigerator and pantry and wing it from there.   I make big batches to have leftovers and put some in the freezer for later.

* Placed an order with Omaha Steaks so I could be guaranteed to have quality meat to eat. I don't really trust someone else to do my meat shopping.

* Joined a mastermind group to help me with a behind the scenes project I've had brewing in my mind for a while. We have 11 members across the U.S., 1 in eastern Canada, and 1 in Quito, Ecuador.

* Wander around my yard every day to follow the daily progress as my plants and flowers bud and bloom. I should have another nice crop of blueberries this year.

* Keeping in touch with family and friends by phone, text, email, and social media. Several of us installed the WhatsApp phone app so we can see each other while we talk. I haven't gotten into Facetime or Skype.

* Taking advantage of the many online learning opportunities, many of which are FREE. These include but are not limited to the following:
Podcasts, YouTube, Ted Talks, The Great Courses, Udemy, and Teachable.

There are many many other educational options, depending on what you want to learn.  Whatever you want to learn, you can probably do it online.

What I am NOT doing is binge watching Netflix or any other TV programs. Yes, I watch tv or a movie while on my treadmill but very little otherwise.

"When written in Chinese, the word crisis is composed of two characters. One represents danger and the other opportunity."

-John F. Kennedy

So, this is my Second Chance Saturday post. I see this as our Second Chance to hit the reset button.

My hope is that when we get to the "other side" of this crisis we can all look back and be grateful for having avoided the danger and having taken advantage of the opportunities.

Stay well everyone!

I hear ya. You need to look good working in the yard in case someone sees you!  LOL  I'm kind of the same way, except with my back issues I hire almost all of my yard work done so I just walk around looking good.  HaHa.

Have a nice week!

Hi Jeff Dowler, CRS
At least it's nice to have at least some of the usual routine, isn't it... coffee, feeding the cats, etc. ?   It's figuring out the being home all the time that takes a bit of time to adjust to.

Enjoy your week!

Hi Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS
I hope we get to unadjust to this new normal sooner rather than later.

I do know Spring can be a horrible time for allergies. I hope you find relief!  Stay safe, my friend!

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat
Nothing wrong with being a squirrel. And, lounging around in your jammies is fine. I just find I'm more productive if I get dressed, even if I am in the house.

I just placed another InstaCart order and am stocking up more than usual too so I don't need to place orders quite so often. Maybe I can go two weeks instead of every week.  The only challenge is to keep fresh fruits and veggies in the house.

Always appreciate a Feature in the Old Fart's Club. I am a proud Old Fart.

Enjoy your week and stay well, my friend!

Hi Debbie Gartner
14-day delay on groceries? That would be stressful. I do recommend InstaCart. You get to pick when you want your groceries delivered. I placed an order last night and requested delivery today between 10 - noon.  If I had ordered during the day, they would have delivered same day but I didn't want to make anyone do a Sunday delivery.  Your area may be a little different depending on availability and demand.

Stay safe, Debbie! I know NY is under seige from this virus.

Hi Endre Barath, Jr.
Surely Diane wouldn't deny you a good steak once in a while. I grilled myself a top sirloin with sauteed onions and mushrooms the other night. I have NEVER done that when by myself before. It was so yummy.   That said, mostly, I eat chicken for meat.

Fantastic post Carol! Today is sunny so will take advantage of that and get out in the yard. I started a 'piggie' project a ways back and need to get back to it. Right now is a perfect time to do that. Occupying the mind and working the body helps keep the attitude in check.

Hi Carol!  Glad to hear you are doing well and making do with what you have.  Those insta-pots are amazing!  I agree with you about gift certificates and food delivery.  So far I've been able to go to the grocery store here and there as stay at home is not mandatory here, but I follow all kinds of regimented procedures when I go.  Can't wait to see photos of your blueberries!

Hi Grant Schneider
All the courses are shut down in Washington and I think it would be considered trespassing if I tried.  I'm using my treadmill to get some exercise.  Thanks for checking in. Hope you are staying safe and well.
