Food Assistance Programs - COVID-19 UPDATE

Give with Your Whole Heart
We often forget that it’s not those who normally utilize local, state and federal programs for food assistance who need it now. Those in need are far-reaching - more than we ever could or would have imagined.

Think of the friends who may earn six-figures and enjoy life so much, they save nothing - but, boy, they live in the lap of luxury day-in and day-out. Until…

Job losses have hit more Americans than any of us can believe - this virus has not discriminated. We’re all susceptible to the impacts of the disease, whether we’re inflicted physically or economically. If you know someone with whom you can share this information, please do - there’s no stigma attached to need. Let’s do everything we can to help our fellow Americans during these incredibly trying times for all.

FOOD ASSISTANCE

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), more commonly known as food stamps, ensures that Americans receive the food they need, especially if they are newly unemployed. Congress has invested in SNAP in the last three bills to help Americans put food on the table during this crisis.

*To apply for SNAP, contact your state SNAP office or the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food & Nutrition Services regional offices near you.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

  • Local Food Banks NC/SCThe Committee on House Agriculture is broken down by regions - NC & SC are both located in the southeast region. The regional offices, including ours (SERO) can be found here.
  • Fact Sheet and FAQs on SNAP programs.
  • The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women Infants and Children (WIC) provides access to nutritious foods to low-income pregnant women or mothers. To see if you are eligible for WIC benefits by using WIC’s pre-screening tool, click here.
  • To learn more about finding your state’s agency & how to apply for WIC, click here.
  • For more information about federal food assistance programs, visit the US Department of Agriculture’s Coronavirus Nutrition Response.

FOOD BANKS

  • The federal government has now secured $850 million in emergency funding for The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). This funding is in place to help food banks face increased utilization, as well as meeting the unprecedented demand in countless communities across the country due to the coronavirus. The USDA Food & Nutrition Service provides a list of state contacts; click here for yours. You can also visit FeedingAmerica.com to find a local food bank near you.
  • To find food assistance near you, call the USDA National Hunger Hotline 1-866-3-HUNGRY/1- 877-8-HAMBRE

It is amazing how many people in affluent areas need help right now. People always presume everyone is OK. Good information to share.

Good afternoon Debe. This virus has turned the world upside down. Even wealthy, or comfortable folks get scared and become needy. Nice post my friend. Stay well.

Morning Debe.

I know the largest employer in the U.S., other than the government has told everyone ,except for those essential employees, to stay at home.  Traffic is almost non-existent

Debe Maxwell, CRS - I became acutely aware of what affluent women were going through when the company I worked for let 14,000 employees go, including myself. I really, really needed work but the Employment Agency I went to explained she only hired affluent women because they were prone to more anxiety and depression. Unfortunately, she couldn't help me because I did not qualify. And before I left, she showed me around (just in case I knew women who fit her job descriptions). She walked me to the back room where she had a dressing room filled with elegant suits, shoes, and jewelry to help those women in need and she gave them what they needed for FREE.  Nope, in Dallas, I did not get hired in Corporate America again.

Hi Debe Maxwell, CRS,

One thing about being in our great land, we will all come together during times of disaster and uncertain times like we are experiencing. There is nothing better than helping someone else.

Debe Maxwell, CRS - thank goodness for Food Banks, Meals on Wheels, and Food Assistance. We are a nation of generous hearts. Thank God for volunteers who give so much back to their communities and think of everyone in need. May no mouth be missed, especially when it comes to children, the elderly, and pets that need adoption.
