Joseph Abraham Gottlieb was born in The Bronx, New York City, New York, back in 1918 to Jacob and Anna. The family moved to South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania when he was young. He was drafted into the United States Army during WWII stationed in Fort Sam Houston in Texas.
After being discharged he worked as a stand-up comedian. He could be seen on the Ed Sullivan Show (showing my age, but I do remember seeing him on stage). He guest-hosted The Tonight Show for Jack Paar. He stared in situation comedy series with his own show from 1961 to 1965. He married Sylvia Ruzga in 1941, they were married for 58 years until her death in 1999 from lung cancer. He died in 2007, he was 89.
While you may not recognize the name, surely (if you’re old enough) you surely know him by his stage name of Joey Bishop.
