Ask An Ambassador: Why Are You Here?

Michael Jacobs gave me cause this weekend to revisit a post from 2011.  What I saw was a snapshot into a different version of ActiveRain than exists for me now.  Much more social, more conversation in the comment threads, and a post I'd written just for fun, not for business.

My purpose for being here has evolved over the years, much more business generating posts and far fewer just for fun type posts similar to that one.

What I also noticed is there were a lot of faces in the comment thread that have been absent for many, many moons from this community.

What I also noticed is there were a lot of faces that are STILL here almost 9 years later.

I've seen people leave this community for many reasons over the years, some logical, some emotional.

Some determined blogging just wasn't for them.  Too much work, too long to get results.  Facebook gave them the immediate rush they needed.

Some got miffed at management and away they go.

Some didn't like the ownership changes.  Blog on a site owned by Zillow (at the time)??!! NOPE!!

Some get in a tangle with other folks here and decide enough.

Some need their time back.  Family needs come first.

Some moved on to their own blogging site and put their effort there.

Some moved on because ActiveRain didn't get them page 1 as easily as it used to.

Some the Grim Reaper visited.

But others stay, year after year.  They have a reason (or a handful of 'em) for staying here.  They may not be here daily, but they're here more often than not.

The social interaction in a relatively safe environment free of the things that plague Facebook.

The ease of blogging.  The platform is here and it's not too hard to figure out how to write and post.

The cost is reasonable, and for the majority of us:  FREE.

The learning from others is really appealing.  Most often if something is new AND worth doing, someone here will be talking about it.

Blogging still works.  Maybe the SEO isn't as strong because there is a LOT more competition out there.  But niche blogging still has some Google ooomph if you've got the right niche.

Points.  It's an addiction for some, so as long as there's a Leaderboard to move up, they'll be here.

So, do you know why you're here?

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Yes, there are lots of reasons why people continue to post here, and lots of reasons why they leave. I still learn new things on AR every day.

I am still learning from Active Rain - and I really enjoy the interaction with members here.  It makes me sad that in the midst of all that we are going through that personalities and disagreements are occasionally asserting themselves

How many "janitors" or ambassadors do we have in AR? Do you have to contribute a duplicate organ to become one? Do you get a better parking spot or a key to the hand ball court? How much would you contribute to like an airline where the employees do a corporate buy out, to make AR company owned? We can't blame lack of leadership for stale happening. That's the AR virus that is contagious. New members, giving them feature posts to get them in the groove and not the same old rehash would be a big shot in the blogging arm. Let's storm the warden's office and take charge of the platform.

You're right, the right niche and long tail keyword titles can still work. However, for the most part, I'm here for the learning - amazing bunch of sharing professionals in AR. And, of course the friendships - virtual and the face to face. Several of my closest friends (we're talking lifetime, like family friends) were found in the Rain- that's pretty worthwhile.

Someone long gone on AR twisted my arm to start here during the last downturn, and I was pretty active for the next several years. Then my favorites dropped off, new ones took their place. Mostly it was "social" but I did get business from it so it made financial sense.  However, it took a lot of my daily time and I felt that I needed to get out more in my OWN community and meet up with actual people. And that's when my business really spiked.  I needed to get out the door! I also needed to put marketing dollars into places that the AR community did not approve of.  Yes, "Z". I know for a fact that many of you do also, but you don't admit it here. So I cut back my time on AR. Now, "sheltered in place" where I can't physically go out, I'm revisiting AR to, hopefully, build some new bonds with likeminded members. This time, I'm looking for "virtual" professional companionship, rather than business. And, who knows, I may be surprised once again.

What’s It All About Alfie – oops I mean Liz and Bill Spear? Based on what I know, AR sets the standard for blogging through its members commitment to quality, authenticity, and its diverse topics from everything real estate related, what’s new in digital technology, marketing, listings, and other points of interests, such as milestones, accolades, celebrations, fun, contests and challenges. In other words, anything goes except when a member crosses the line or there is a dispute that can’t be resolved and decisions will be made from AR or voluntary resignation. On a personal note, gosh I miss Lenn Harley.

Hi Bill ahhh so many reasons why I'm still here after all these years.  When I first began in earnest 2008 (joined in 06 but didn't do much) I so appreciated the learning aspect of blogging of which I was pretty much clueless. I learned quickly and catapulted our company to the 1st page of G etc in record time.  I also appreciated all the professional people on this platform. Around year 2, I saw that many friendships had been created both online and in person. I've met 100's of members in person over the years.  And have become very good friends with quite a few folks.  That's been a huge gift. People I've met in person actually ARE who they say they are online.....and when we meetup it's like we've been friends for a very long time.

I have also appreciated the professionalism (for the most part) on this platform vs the crazy stuff going on on other SM platforms.

As for blogging now, that's not my primary focus anymore.  Who knows maybe I'll get back in the groove and start writing serious stuff again - more towards subject matters in RE, not so much looking for ranking (which has  long gone astray as we all know)

Bill,

I (Alexandra) write most of the posts, and comments.  I tell Ron the interesting stuff.  I am here because I learn and I enjoy the camaraderie of the people I hear.  We have met many of the members face to face, and some have turned into "best" friends...and some great acquaintances...I started writing to see what this social media stuff was all about in 2008...a

Good afternoon Liz and Bill Spear ,

Wow ..I'm so glad you provided a link to that post in 2011..loved it. Yes I think for many of us we can say our reason for being here in AR has evolved over the years. I started in Oct. of 2008 and have consistently learned from others all over the country. My blogging on my niche community definitely put me over the top with market share. I've seen many come and go in AR but I still see so many familiar faces and those that care and take the time to lift your spirits when needed lifting.

I'm here for business - but mostly I'm here because I enjoy both the people and the posts they write. I enjoy when good discussions on some topic get going and new ideas are offered.

I'm glad you included a link to that old post. It was fun to see the faces we don't see any more.

I'm sorry when people get mad and leave - thinking that in most cases it's OK to agree to disagree. I read once that if two people always had the same opinions, one of them was unnecessary. That made sense to me!

You do such a good job of getting to the bottom line and summarizing beautifully. All of those were definite reasons to be here - well, maybe not the music (thanks, Candice A. Donofrio), but for sure the other things you mentioned.

Hi Liz and Bill Spear - I started back in 2011 because I thought I would try it.  After success kicked in I had my website redesigned and do blogs there too.  But along the way I gathered many friends.  And people here are civil, not like Facebook.
