Friday Thoughts...Words Buzzing Around

Many years ago I started working in business development for a company that marketed to health-care-related companies.  I had to learn a brand new lingo. Not the medical terminology but the business buzzwords that seemed to have popped up in the years since I’d worked in Houston.

buzzwords

Where do these words come from?

I’ve been listening to the daily COVID-19 briefing (BTW... Dr. Deborah Birx reminds me of Larry’s mother) and two words leaped out at me.

Granular and Mitigate.

It’s not that I don’t know the meaning of these words but I’ve not seen them used in the context that they are currently being used in.

Then again, we’ve never had to face something like this either.

Here are a few other words with which we’ve become acquainted in the Coronavirus era…

Community spread

Flatten the curve

Social distancing

Herd immunity

Contact tracing

Comorbidity

And who remembers when these started buzzing around us and becoming integrated into our vocabulary?

Actionable

______-driven as in consumer-driven

Robust

Low hanging fruit

Value-added

Wheelhouse

Influencer

User friendly

What words can you add?

I too am flabbergasted by so many words. You did a great job in making your point.

Hi Kathy Streib, I echo Nina Hollander,  I do not want to hear these words ever..ever again.  I would add "rockstar agent", hearing that drives me crazy.

If I never hear those "Actionable" words again, I would not miss them. The other word phrase that drives me nuts and now seems to have come to fruition is:

No man is a island.... We can all chew on that one and spit.

Kathy-Some words are used ad nauseam.  Social distancing is one of them now.  I know that is necessary but tiring of the phrase.  I also don't like the phrase Hang in there or It is what it is.

Kathy I don't know when all of those terms popped up, but most of them have been during my life time.  I wonder what the buzz words will be 50 years from now.

I remember those words like "Low hanging fruit."  I also remember, "Think outside the box."  It was used a lot at nearly every company meeting.  Then finally, it was pointed out those who asked us to think outside the box, likely created the box in the first place.

HI Kathy Streib - How Fun!  - The one that is like nails on a chalkboard for me is "At the end of the day"

Another one that drives me nuts is a Valley Girl expression "For Sure!"  Sometimes I hear this on HGTV shows like House Hunter where the couple has a younger woman looking for a home. I will count the number of times I hear it.  I have counted as much as 11 times on a ½ hour show!!

Wayne Martin I see these buzzwords everywhere and not just in this instance.

Sham Reddy CRS don't get me started on today's "speak" by younger people.

Nina Hollander that's exactly what I think. It shows no originality.

Hi Donald Urschalitz you are a kind person!!

Kat Palmiotti I hear many of them and I cringe.

Michael Jacobs I like Holland Taylor. She always has such a commanding and don't mess with me presence. I like that!

Brian England I really don't know. Perhaps we'll do a better job of washing our hands and staying home when sick.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel I love those words as well. One of the reasons I love Texas so much is that you do hear "Thank you" a lot.

Anna Banana Kruchten Broker, CRB, CRS In my day, I couldn't stand hearing people say "let's rap."

Grant Schneider do you think they even know what it means.

Will Hamm I may have to do some research to find out where these came from.

Hi Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS Thank you!!!!  Have a great weekend.

Beth Atalay and Nina Hollander you have to wonder if anyone can piece together a relatively coherent sentence or conversation without any of these words.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP I'm with you on the word "Actionable" as in actionable intelligence.

Sharon Lee I may be guilty of saying "it is what it is" because Larry is always saying it.

George Souto who knows. Everyone speaks in "cryptic talk" so if we were to pop in to listen we may not be able to understand anything.

Myrl Jeffcoat good one!!! Think outside the box (as long as you don't step outside the one I've drawn for you.)

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® Don't get me started. I can't stand "my bad" and "just saying."  When someone says that to me, I replay "just saying what?"

Hi Kathy,  It's amazing how quickly common buzz words can change - popular to meaningless in no time at all.  Congratulations on the feature.

Morning Kathy.

Frankly, do you expect me to rack what little memory bank I have so early this morning?  With that I can remember when "ain't" first started buzzing around.  Giving away my age

I'm not familiar with comorbidity.

We are living in a whole new world right now. More new words to come I'm sure.
