What a better way to celebrate National Pet Day than to highlight them in our homes. I don't know if every home truly needs a pet, but I know a LOT of homes that are better for the animals they own.
Over the years we have had our very own menagerie of pets.... ducks, chickens, rabbits, Kitty Kat, Scout the dog and a host of random visitors that have made our yard theirs including deer, a fox, more bunnies, squirrels and a host of wild cats and bunnies.
The dog... he is our indoor friend. And truly he gets the most of the most attention. When we got him it took two days to figure out his name because their were four of us claiming the rights to our perfect choices. After pages and pages of suggestions we took a vote. And somehow Scout won.
Our Beagle Collie mix is certainly a Scout. He runs straight out the door and thru the chickens causing them to go all aflutter and then with his rounding up skills he brings them together again.
Sometimes (usually) he gets stuck on the scent and he hears nothing while he's hunting down invisible tracks of whatever passed thru. This has gotten him in a good deal of trouble.
And always in the winter he is throwing his head into snowbanks after sniffing for minutes upon minutes for whatever lurks below the surface of white fluff.
He is a well loved dog - and companion - in our home. Entertaining the boys and sparking lots of activity. As we celebrate our beloved pet on #Nationalpetday we'd love to take a time out and celebrate yours as well. Tell me about the beloved animal in your house! I'd love to hear the stories.
Every house needs a pet

What a cute story about Scout! He sounds like a bundle of energy. Our current dog is Hercules. We rescued him from the animal shelter about three months ago. He's such a big mush and just wants to be petted all day long. The only time he barks is when a stranger pulls up our driveway. If he smells or sees turkeys or chipmunks, squirrels, he zooms after them like a crazy dog. Otherwise, he's very mild mannered!
