No one is happy with having to miss out on special moments while we get through this extended COVID-19 pause in our lives. It is even harder to explain to a small child while they can't celebrate their birthday with friends and classmates.
The Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department has come up with a spectacular way to take a little bit of the pain away for anyone who has to celebrate a birthday during this time. A volunteer member will drive the Cabin John Park VFD bright red 1930 Brockway fire truck by the home of the celebrant. They will even deliver a good bag to the birthday celebrant if it is okay with the family.
So far, the Brockway has been getting a good workout - there have been half a dozen drive-bys since the Fire Department made its offer three days ago. And there are lots of parties scheduled going forward. The Fire Department has celebrated birthdays for a three year old and a 92 year old! Even as this pandemic has brought grief and anger to many people, it has also brought us closer together. We are very lucky in Bethesda MD because our fire department is always there for us - not just for emergencies but also for fun events. Santa rides through our neighborhoods every year at Christmas, waving to the children and sharing candy canes! They also come for the 4th of July celebration in our neighborhood (assuming there is no call for them to put out a fire or rescue someone.) I would never have thought to have the 1930's firetruck come to a birthday party though so I am really glad that they did!
