Soon to be a Throwback but When?

 

Encina Power Station in Carlsbad CA

 

The Encina Power Station along the Coast Road in Carlsbad (viewed from above the Carlsbad Flower Fields), about 1.5 miles south of the Village, is soon to be a throwback.

 

Whether you like it or not - and opinions are mixed - the plant is due to be torn down very soon (I have seen a variety of dates but some of the demolition was due to start in December 2019 with completion sometime in 2021).

 

The power plant tower is visible for many miles up and down the coast, and from many points inland, and while one might not like this iconic structure (the plant was built in 1954, the chimney added in the late 1970s), it will certainly be a different landscape in Carlsbad when it's gone.

 

Here's another view, in some of our coastal fog...affectionately called the marine layer.

Hello Jeff - I don't recall ever seeing this in the past on my various trips around Carlsbad.  Maybe other things and destinations on my mind.  Or maybe it's a temporary(or not so temporary) lapse in memory.   

Like it or not, change is a part of life.

It certainly is an interesting looking building.  Speaking of fog are you seeing clearer skies in your area because of less pollution in the air?

I've always been fascinated by the fog in SF although haven't lived the...I certainly experienced it a number of times.

As far as landmarks, it really depends on what it is. This is a power plant past it's usefulness so it's time to go. Perhaps they'll erect a memorial! There have been some suggestions around that. If nothing else photos will live on.

Depends on the change, too. In this case I have no issue with it going. Will it look different? You bet, but can't say I will miss it. And the plant's been replaced by the more efficient Carlsbad Energy Center.

None at all. The new plant is up and running and has been since 2018 when they started to decommission the old plant. The new one is more efficient and can ramp up quickly to deal with the power grid adjustments when needed in a matter of hours. From my limited understanding it's good all around!

Jeff- we do become attached to certain things, don't we? Off the Boca Inlet, there is the infamous pink tower. It's part of the Boca resort, if I remember. Anyway boaters used it to help guide them to the inlet. I remember telling Larry that if they ever demolished it, I wonder how many boaters would know where to go!

Hi Jeff Dowler, CRS - It is interesting how some of these plants are right near the beach.  There is one in Huntington Beach as well.  I can remember all the oil wells for miles near the beaches.  Now they are basically gone as well. The only constant is change... as they say.
