Throwback Thursday...the Circle of Life

When we lived in Delray Beach, many of our walks were at Green Cay Wetlands. We saw all kinds of wild birds, alligators, a few snakes (ick) and bobcats, turtles, and raccoons.

Besides the exercise and fresh air, being out at Green Cay was like an ongoing nature lesson.

We were privy to mating rituals, nest building, births, and sadly, as in the circle of life, some deaths.

We were out with our friend’s young children and they saw a great blue heron flying off with a baby moorhen. We came across birds with recently caught prey.

We were concerned that they would be upset but while they were interested, they took it in stride.

Maybe it was because they’d seen The Lion King more times than you could count.

You have captured some amazing shots there, Kathy!  I'm not big on snakes either.  I keep thinking with all the cuddly furry things around, why snakes!

When I was a child watching "The Wonderful World of Walt Disney," I'd always root for the impala or deer to escape; some did, others didn't. Even the big cats need to eat. The way of life. Great photos.

I think that they could sense how kind of a person you were and didn't mind you being around.

The circle of life....we see it all the time living close to the preserve. That's why we keep a close eye on Barney if we hear the Owls at night.

Hi Donald Urschalitz we have a lot of doves and mockingbirds who stop by to dine but nest somewhere else.

Hi Michael Jacobs no more alligators even though we do have them in Texas. We are enjoying our birds though.

I like to see birds in the Springtime building nests and raising babies. Hawks getting them not so much.

Wayne Martin When do you think you'll be able to head back to Florida?

I love it too Ron and Alexandra Seigel We have mom bluebird incubating her second brood in our back yard and we see baby cardinals coming by our feeder.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS we've had birds in our backyard that weren't here last year.  We saw a Baltimore Oriole just last week.

Grant Schneider I've been pleasantly surprised that my mini-me is interested in birds.

Nina Hollander they do.  I wonder if they learn some of their feelings from us.

George Souto I think what they need is the truth. Often they're confused because we tip-toe around it.

Exactly Myrl Jeffcoat Now with warmer weather, the snakes are out. I've been reading on our local Nextdoor app of all of their snakes.

Lottie Kendall same here and I loved that show. We see a hawk flying around and I fear they will pick off some of our baby bluebirds. But Larry reminds me that hawks have to eat too.

Michael Jacobs and Barbara Todaro I only have Florida gator photos...for now. The fishing lease near Houston Larry used to belong to did have gators. I promise that should I see a Texas gator I will take a pic for you.

Sharon Lee We have so many different birds now. Had a Baltimore Oriole and think we may have seen an indigo bunting.

Hi Kathy:

Green Cay Wetlands sounds like a wonderful place to have spent so much time with nature. And how wonderful to have that preserved for all to enjoy!

The circle of life. Bernie would have been upset. We can't watch animal shows for that reason. Love him. :)

PS. Yesterday, I was watching a huge mason bee down at the garden. I kept thinking, this is a big bee, wonder if it's the queen? Oops, turns out it was two bees doing what nature intended. I quickly excused myself to give them privacy. Poor male, that is his only job, and then he dies. Happy.  :)
