How do you spell hypocrisy: Here we all are, no matter where you live, sheltering in place; meanwhile, here in Los Angeles, flights from Wuhan are landing at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
As most of you know, I am a Beverly Hills Realtor who calls the 90045 zip code, Westchester, CA, home. Westchester is in very close proximity to LAX. I have written many posts and taken many pictures of airplanes landing for your enjoyment.
We have been Sheltering in Place for an exceptionally long time – 4 weeks, 5 weeks, 6 weeks – in the beginning I was counting the days but at this point, it doesn’t matter. It feels like years as we go through phases and daily changes that effect not just the life of a Realtor, but everyone. Overnight, our lives were made to drastically stop.
The quest for ‘survival’ turned into a quest for supplies - the most basic necessities such as toilet paper, water, kitty litter, pet food, and sanitizing products just to name a few. After six plus weeks, let’s add to that the quest for the mental health of ourselves, our friends, acquaintances and coworkers. Diane and I have been playing by the rules; she is doing her best working from home which is something I have been familiar with long before now. She has now taken a reduction in pay, but is thankful that she still has a job as some of our neighbors and friends have either been furloughed or, worse, laid off. We also count our blessings that we have our rescue animals – they are enjoying this most of all since they are unaware of the pandemic and related economic consequences; they are just happy to have mom and dad home all day every day! Ignorance is bliss!
Over the past couple of weeks, I have noticed more traffic on the road, more people milling out and about. Most notably, I noticed more planes coming in and going out of LAX at a much more frequent rate. We had been getting rather used to the quiet solitude of less flights.
That changed three nights ago. For those who don’t know, LAX has flight restrictions between 1 am and 6 am trying to be a good neighbor to 90045 Westchester residents. I woke up at 2:20 a.m. to a plane that flew over our home, clearly off course and out of the flight restriction pattern. It was followed by about 3 additional planes coming and going until about 3:00 am when I fell back to sleep. Curiosity got the better of me that morning so after checking my emails, I searched for flight arrivals and departures to LAX. My initial reaction was ‘shock’, ‘outrage’ and ‘annoyance’ to name a few. See for yourself where these international arrivals were coming from. A picture is worth a thousand words as they say!
We all have been concerned about the “supply chain” yet, have no worries, the supply chain is back on track. As you are listening to the media and the politicians talking about “staying at home for your own good and the good of everyone’s health and safety so we can flatten the curve, truth be told we have flights coming in from, of all places, WUHAN. In fact, Governor Gavin Newsom made a deal to buy masks from electric car maker, BYD, in China. Why not have our own U.S. electric car manufacturers make masks for us. Do you really want to wear a mask that was made in China? I don’t. Is there another agenda? Looking at all the flights, these are all supply flights and what are they bringing in? Toilet paper? Corona Virus? Just thinking out loud here. It’s time to wake up and hold the people in charge accountable. (Speaking of, Diane wrote to our councilman, Mike Bonin, and she is still waiting for an explanation, as it was ‘referred to his LAX liaison’)
I am a firm believer that Sheltering in Place is not sustainable for two years or however long it takes while the antidote for the virus is being created. Sweden has not had a lock down and they appear to be having things under control, how do you explain that? I welcome all your comments positive or negative, let me know where I am going wrong or what I am missing. In the mean time please stay safe and healthy.
Wishing you a safe and healthy life and I look forward to your comments.
