Pearl Grey

Pearl Grey was born in Ohio back in 1872 to Lewis and Alice.  Like me at an early age he was fascinated by history.  His father was abusive to Pearl, which caused him to frequently be engaged in brawls.  He did find comfort by finding a father substitute by the name of Muddy Miser.

He attended the University of Pennsylvania on a baseball scholarship, graduating with a degree in dentistry in 1896. After graduation, he set up practice in New York City.  He moved to California in 1918.  Because of his father’s abuse he struggled with bouts of depression, anger and mood swings for the rest of his life.  His love was fishing and exploring taking copious notes about both.

Pearl died of heart failure in 1939.  So, if you haven’t figured it out by now or haven’t heard of Pearl, what about if I add his middle name Zane. Yep, this is who I’m writing about today, Zane Grey.

Your day is worthwhile when you make someone smile, so give the free gift of a smile today

He liked fishing as much as baseball. A spunky lad to say the least.

Muddy Miser is an interesting name, I am wondering if that was his real name or a nickname?

Thanks for sharing, I did not even know we had colleges that gave out baseball scholarships in the 1890s.

I've heard of Zane Grey... but can't say I know much about him. Starting out life with a name like Pearl is abuse in and of itself if you ask me, James.

HI James- amazing at what Zane Grey accomplished in spite of an abusive father. Dentistry, baseball and fishing.

I've never been a fan of any one sprots figure even though I love sports. Sports heros have feet of clay just like the rest of us. I still have no idea what made him famous but I still appreciate the post James Dray

Hi James Dray,

Zane Grey is part of Sedona Folklore.  He wrote "Call of the Wild" in 1918 while staying in Oak Creek Canyon right outside of Sedona.  He came back in 1923 and filmed the silent movie version and this opened the flood gates to Hollywood to make movies here. I should write a blog!

I believe Jack London wrote Call of the Wild.  Zane Grey had a very interesting life, managing in spite of his father.  I hope his accomplishments brought him some satisfaction.
