Caleb Greenwood

Caleb Greenwood was born in Virginia back in 1783. I don’t have any information on him until 1810 when he took part in a fur trapping expedition with John Jacob Astor.  He trapped independently on the Arkansas River and the upper Missouri River.  He was also in good company like Jim Bridger when they crossed the Wind River Mountains.

In 1825, he joined a group led by Jedediah Smith with the Hudson’s Bay Company. In 1844, he guided a group across the Sierra Nevada mountain range.  He returned the next year with two sons pioneering a new route bypassing the Truckee River Canyon. He died in 1873, he was 90.

What you may not know about Caleb is that in 1846 on his return trip, well that is something you may have heard of the California Trail.  That’s right he was the person who founded that trail, only now you know the rest of the story.

He must have been one tough survivalist.  With all that fresh air, no wonder he lived until 90!

Good morning, James... the California Trail was not one I'm familiar with. This was certainly a man who loved to explore.

Very interesting ! But if he had stuck with John Jacob Astor he would have been a Gazillionaire. !

Good morning James,

At least he wasn't required to wear a mask! I would love to take the horses and follow the trail, especially now!

Make yourself an astonishing day.

Hmm, so that is how our roads began?  It is crazy to think of how people traveled from place to place back in the day.
