Hello Grant Schneider - I love this picture; it says motherhood to me in the best possible way. Enjoy the weekend.

What a great photo. Love the recipe too, Lottie. I know where to get a photo of my mom, lucky to have her in the next room. ;)

Hi Lottie... just love, love, love the photo. I have a wall of family photos in my office of family going back to WWI.... pictures of great grandparents, grandparents, parents, siblings... all the way to the 1950's and all in black and white. Sad to say, as neither my mother nor my grandmother cooked, I have no recipes to share because none were passed down.

Love the photo of your Mom, her sister and kids! Recipes were simple back then....gotta love that! Your Mom's spirit sounds a great deal like my Mom's... Always adventurous, full of enthusiasm and positivity! We were fortunate girls, weren't we!!

Hello Lottie - what a nice photo and a loving memory of your Mom you have shared. It seems you have been influenced by her appreciation of marketing(how else can the naming baked goods be explained beyond the marketing genius it was?) as well as hiking.
I like "how" Lise Howe has inspired so many other AR members to share recipes and memories with her original post.

Hi Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - you are so fortunate to have your mother with you--but you know that ![]()
Anna Banana Kruchten Arizona's Top Banana! - we both were fortunate, indeed. I hope my daughters and granddaughters inherited that zest for living, the legacy of my mom.
Michael Jacobs - Lise Howe inspired many enjoyable posts. I've learned not to read the recipes before breakfast! My mother was an inspiration, and I'm delighted that a few of her good traits rubbed off on me.
Glad you liked the memories and photo, Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS - it's a favorite of mine.

George Souto - you're welcome. I hope you and your family have a lovely Mother's Day weekend.
Hi Nina Hollander - I can tell that you know why this picture is so special to me; it speaks volumes, doesn't it? Although you might not have cooking memories from your mother or grandmother, I know you have many other good ones.
Lottie-Those are great photos of your Mom and aunt. Your recipe for the Sunday special sounds good. Recipe with potato, coconut and chocolate sounds different but last year at a campground where lots of folks from Idaho stayed they had Idaho spud candy bars which were made with potato, chocolate and coconut I think and they were pretty good.

Lottie,
What a great photo you shared with us. These have so much character to them, and I love that your mom went backpacking in Europe in her 60's. A

Lottie, My mother was not much of a cook either. She was a meat and potato kind of person and kept it simple.
Like you, I have fond memories of my Mom and the times we shared together. As I got older I did all of the cooking and baking for our family of 8. I loved to cook and I loved baking more.
The photo is priceless.

It is interesting about the lack of specifics on many recipes from our parents, or their parents. "Just put it on till it looks like enough." Haha!
Thanks for sharing your mom's recipes. I love the photo!
Hi Kathleen Daniels - and you still enjoy cooking, right? I do, when I have time to be creative. I haven't done any baking for years; I lack the discipline of Barbara Todaro to not eat what I might bake.

I still enjoy cooking. As you know I eat all organic and do not eat any kind of meat, fish, eggs, or dairy. That means my cooking is vastly different these days. I no longer bake - I would eat it if I did.
Ron and Alexandra Seigel - I love that photo, Alexandra. Two young women, full of love and plans for the future! My mother had a real spirit of adventure and in her quiet way, made friends wherever she went. I was lucky to have her as my mother.
Hi Kat Palmiotti - perhaps because people used to cook 3 meals a day, every day, they became adept at knowing and estimating amounts of ingredients. Thanks for your nice comment about the photo; it's my favorite.

Sharon Lee - it makes sense that people from Idaho would find many creative uses for potatoes. I wonder if I would still like potato candy?
Lise Howe really started something wonderful with her posts and I am enjoying the posts that are coming from it. I love seeing old pictures and that coconut potato candy sounds delicious.

Brian England - I must say I think potato-coconut candy sounds bizarre -- but I remember that we liked it as kids; quite the treat!
Hannah Williams - having a mother who was a lot of fun is more important than having a her be a great cook in my opinion. We were lucky to have moms like that.

Hi again, Kathleen Daniels - a recipe for an eggless frittata came my way today. I wish I had sent it to you. Garbanzo bean flour replaced eggs. Do you cook with that type of flour? I never have.
Feeding the soul is the best type of cooking, Myrl Jeffcoat ! Thanks for the feature in the Old Farts Club.
Jeff Dowler, CRS - I wish I had kept more of her recipes, but I'm not much of a collector. I did keep lots of old photos, and am happy I did.
Lottie, this is such a great story. When I read that your Mom headed to Europe with her back-pack, I felt, yes, I can relate to that, I did it, too (in my early 20-ies). Then, I saw the next line - " in her 60-ies". That is something I really admire. Maybe, I'll get a chance to revisit the places we travelled in my 20-ies, with a back pack, again, this decade ... It will be worth it.

Lottie Kendall - What a GREAT story for Mother's Day! Your story and the beautiful photograph gave me goosebumps! It sounds like a clip from a movie that I would want to watch, especially if it included your mother's footprints, backpacking to Europe in her 60s! Now I know exactly where you get your courage, strength, faith, and spirit of adventure. You are your mother's daughter in the best ways that count.

Hi Steffy Hristova - in her quiet way, my mother was a rock, and had a wonderful, adventurous spirit. If I ever find myself lacking in courage, I think of her and forge ahead. I hope your day yesterday was wonderful.
George Souto - thanks for your kind greeting; I had a fabulous day and look forward to this new week, whatever it may bring.
Laura Cerrano - I remember your mother from my early days here. Having you continue her legacy keeps her fresh in my mind. Be well.
Hi Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - I hope I have many of my mother's qualities; I admired her greatly (well, perhaps not when I was a sulky teenager!) and cherished our adult times together. She was in her 60s when she took her first European vacation, set off on her own, finding rooms in homes (not unlike today's AirBnB perhaps) from kiosks at the train stations, making friends. Always walking and hiking.
Lottie, Coconut Potato Candy, brilliant. Who'd have guessed. Must try, will probably love as much as the kids !!

Hi Kris Collis, Associate Broker - I haven't eaten that potato candy since childhood, and since I no longer eat much sugar, likely won't again. But I've learned that things change, so who knows? I hope you like it!
Thank you very much, Lottie, for sharing some of your fond memories.
My mother was a wonderful cook.

Back in the depression era I'm sure this recipe made an introduction! Simple ingredients that were inexpensive were common, flour and water. Thank you for sharing this one! Love seeing those photos of that era!

Hi Roy Kelley - did your mother cook in a similar style as Chef Dolores?
Hello Jan Green - the photo of my mother and aunt dates to January 1945 -- WW2 was still raging on. Shortages and rationing was common; I'm sure that impacted the cooking and baking of the day.
I loved reading your mother's recipes and the stories of her life and how she inspired you. I want to go back to Europe - backpacking in my 70s sounds just right! (since I am nearly 68 now)
I don't know any of my Mom's recipes because they were in her head. She was skinny as a rail, but she loved to cook and bake and feed other people.
She always wanted a hot air balloon ride, so in her late 70's she took one. They had a rough landing, the basket tipped over, and she landed on the bottom of the pile of people who fell out. She didn't care; she loved the experience. She also took flying lessons in her 70's - picking up where she had left off when life got in the way years earlier.
Yes, I miss her every day.
Hi Lise Howe - I hope you get the chance to explore, with or without a backpack. Keeping a sense of wonder and trying new things is important for us all.
Hello Marte Cliff - your mother sounds like she knew how to enjoy everything life had in store for her - a great role model.
Good morning Lottie Kendall - thanks for sharing pictures of your mother and aunt. I think I my mother too and hope I can find a picture.
