Vehicle Care During Non-Use

The auto repair shop that we use has offered some suggestions for vehicle care during non-use. This is day 62 that I have not driven my car.

It's clear that vehicle use has gone way down during this difficult time and we wanted to share a few tips that can keep your vehicle in good health while it sits.

Tire pressures - check the driver's door jamb for specifications

If possible, drive the vehicle for 20 minutes every two weeks

If you are unable to drive the vehicle, follow step 4

Park the vehicle in an open area and start the vehicle once every week or two.

Make sure the engine temperature reaches the normal level (20 min)

Check your owners manual for monitoring engine temperature

If you have a Hybrid vehicle (non-Plug-in) steps 8 & 9 are recommended in case you're unable to drive the vehicle:

Place the vehicle in ready mode and set the parking brake

Allow the vehicle to stay in this mode for at least 20 min

Please feel free to call us at 301-896-8900 if you have any questions or need service. We're here to help.

Hi Roy - I keep a car in the garage in Florida so we go two months or so.  I keep a charger there.

Hello Roy - even though my car is a nybrid - the mileage is definitely improving as it is now approaching months per gallon rather than miles per gallon.

Yesterday, I put gas in my car, even though I still had a half tank.  I had driven just 160 miles since March 12th, which was the last time I gassed up.
