Staying Healthy and Physically Fit During Covid -19!!!

Oh, my! I just finished my first round of physical fitness training “at home” style.  I have a hex bar with two ten pound plates on it for a total of 65 pounds. My grandson has my heavier 45 pound plates plus an Olympic bar and EZ bar.  He had no equipment and OUR YMCA “is closed.”

When one doesn’t have access to heavy plates, increasing the number of repetitions is a good substitute. It’s actually the best  of the two!!!

I began my home workout during the first week of March with 60 reps of “squats” using the 65 pounds and then 60 reps of “shoulder shrugs” with that same weight. 

Now, two month later, I’ve worked my way up to 100 repetitions of 65 pound squats and the same 100 reps for shoulder shrugs.

 

I previously accomplished this with 3 workouts a day. Now, I do 50 reps twice a day. My strength has improved tremendously, and I’ve maintained my weight. Gaining weight while sheltering in place is common-place now.

I miss my daily 5:00am workouts at the YMCA.  Hopefully gym openings are on the list of the first phase to re-open!!!

Just a thought for the moment…..

Barbara I have increase my work out in the last month, but has still gained a couple of pounds.  I am trying hard to not let it increase more than that, until I can get back to my normal routine.

Will Hamm the sit ups are good.... if you do weight training, you'll replace fat with lean muscle...

It's possible to maintain good health during these unusual times, and you're proof of that. I've increased my walking, adding in more hills and staircases, and make sure I get up from my computer every hour for at least 250 steps. Those two things have revved up my metabolism nicely.

This morning I did a video that my former pilates teacher made for us when her class was de-funded and ended about 3 years ago. What with the cancers, chemo, radition, etc. I hadn't joined in for almost that long until today. My -- I have a ways to go to regain some of those muscles. But--I'll do it.

Lottie Kendall you'll gain that lean muscle again.... it takes time, but you'll get on it.... that's alot of aerobics you're doing.... when you're walking hold a 5 pound dumbbell in each hand.... that will give you some weight training while you're walking....hold them in front of you at chest height and have the weights  touching each other.... that's a great way to engage upper body muscles...

Michael Jacobs the number of reps is most important unless one is trying to bulk up...gaining muscle mass requires increasing weights.... staying toned is reps...

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP weight training is a passion for me, at this point..... no one was more out of shape and morbidly obese than I was....and I can appreciate the humor.... but I also know the importance of the discipline.... discipline comes with the great desire to accomplish a certain level of performance....
