Sarah Maria Beach was born in Birmingham, England back in 1770 to Richard and Mary. She married Samuel in 1795. Frankly I can’t find out anything about here before that, but apparently, she was highly educated for a woman of her time. More on that in a moment.
Samuel died in 1837, when she was 67. She married Richard who was 28 year her junior, it didn’t take Richard too long to go there his wife’s money, so her divorced him and bought a home in the Richmond Hill area of Clifton. She died in 1852, she as 82.
What you may not know about Sarah Beach Guppy is that she was an English engineer and the first woman to patent a bridge in 1811. Over her career she went on to obtain 10 patents. Including a method of keeping ships free of barnacles, a device which kept tar of coffee and also cooked eggs from the steam to name a couple.
