This Week...Eyes On The Sky

For me, there’s nothing more exciting than seeing a plane in flight. And when you have several...as in the Thunderbirds or Blue Angels...then you can’t help but get goosebumps.

I have often said that the lure of flying is the lure of beauty. Amelia Earhart

We just missed seeing the Blue Angels fly over the Houston area last week  (miscalculation by my own F-4 pilot...which proves why they needed a navigator!)

He who would learn to fly one day must first learn to stand and walk and run and climb and dance; one cannot fly into flying. Friedrich Nietzsche

But Sunday we were able to see about two dozen World War II Warbirds fly over our area. It commemorated the 75th Anniversary of VE Day. This was presented by the Lone Star Flight Museum.

Science does not just drive space travel - space travel also drives science. Leroy Chiao

And this week, the new Space Force flag was unveiled at the White House. The Space Force is the new military branch within the Air Force.

Thankfully the Space Force came about 50 years too late for Larry to join.

No one cares about race or religion or nationality in space travel. We're all just part of Team Human. Anne McClain

I hope you’ll have a chance to see the Thunderbirds or Blue Angels, or even some of the older planes!  Stand tall, Stand proud, and look up to the sky!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Bernie was making a grocery run and got to see them fly-over last week. I kept hoping they'd fly over our house on their way to another area hospital, but alas, we are too far in the country for that to happen.  It always brings me goosebumps too.

I missed seeing them over Philadelphia, they did not come out far enough West for us to catch a glimpse, but have seen some older planes from time to time. I always wonder where a plane is going when I see it leaving a trail  in the sky. Our area is on the flight paths for New York as well as Philadelphia, so we usually see lots of planes, not so many anymore.

Hi Kathy Streib - We only live a little over a mile from the Sedona airport and because it is so quiet here when there is the roar of WWII bombers (or any other plane), coming in for a landing we go outside to see them. Larry got a wonderful shot from his cockpit.  This was my husband's dream that was never fulfilled.

Hi Kathy,
Honestly, my feeble brain can't overcome my grasp of gravity to understand how planes actually fly.  I'm glad they do, though.  LOL

No one asked the Phantom to go to space? It did just about everything else with a slight nudge. WHAT a plane!

Hi Kathy Streib ,

The Thunderbirds flew over Austin (sorry they didn't get to Houston) to salute the Texas front line COVID-19 responders.and it was a sight to behold!! I'm with you there is nothing more exciting than seeing a plane in flight but a grouping is thrilling!

Hi Michael Jacobs I know there was something similar near the WPB airport, not sure what the name was.

Brian England Larry used to bring home magazines on building an airplane. So glad he's out of the phase.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel you have to be special to be a part of the group and not just be an excellent pilot but be able to present well at the many functions they have to attend.

Sharon Lee maybe they'll be out where you are this summer.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD when you attend an air show, you see them walk out to their jets in formation as well. Very organized. The canopies raise at the same time.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 sorry you missed them.  From our backyard we used to be able to see a lot of lanes going to and leaving the airport but since the pandemic...traffic is almost nil.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty so exciting. When we lived in Orlando, I had fun watching some of the lift-offs.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® I'll bet you have a great view of them too. Any photos?

Morning Kathy.

I remember my first airplane ride, I was hooked.  I did stand in my front yard watching the planes land at Hobby.

When we were in San Francisco right after 9/11, we were having lunch outside on the hotel patio when the Blue Angels flew over celebrating Veterans' Day - the city vibrated with the sound of their engines and I was terrified every time they passed overhead - it made me think of how the planes must have sounded in NY on that morning
