Branding Moment: "A Puzzlement!"

By

A brand has to differentiate itself in the market place. When we saw this signage above a store front in a small shopping center in Solvang, we wondered, what does this mean?

The word "dignity" is defined as:

bearing, conduct, or speech indicative of self-respect or appreciation of the formality or gravity of an occasion or situation.
nobility or elevation of character; worthiness: dignity of sentiments.
a sign or token of respect.

How does the word "dignity" differentiate this business from other similar businesses?  In viewing their website, they emphasize their 'human kindness".  In our opinion, this is exactly what any business should be practicing with their clients, whether they are in health care or real estate.  It is a Puzzlement** as a brand!

What do you think?

**"A Puzzlement" is the title of a song from the King and I  musical written by Rodgers and Hammerstein.  It is sung by the King of Siam who is both confused and at the same time adjusting to the changing world during his reign.

Here is the video of Yul Brynner singing the song,  "A Puzzlement" written by Richard Rodgers:

An interesting background from Wikipedia..

Dignity Health is a California-based not-for-profit public-benefit corporation that operates hospitals and ancillary care facilities in three states. As such, it is exempt from federal and state income taxes. Dignity Health is the fifth-largest hospital system in the nation and the largest not-for-profit hospital provider in California.[1] Dignity Health was founded in 1986 by the Sisters of Mercy under the name Catholic Healthcare West.[citation needed]

From the time of its founding, and until 2012, the company was an official ministry of the Roman Catholic Church. In 2012, the company's corporate governance structure changed, moving it out of the Catholic Church and resulting in a name change to Dignity Health.[2]

In February 2019, Dignity Health merged with Catholic Health Initiatives, becoming CommonSpirit Health.[3]

Dignity Health is the official health care provider of the San Francisco Giants. It provides services to minor and major league players and has a clinic at AT&T Park that offers urgent care and physical therapy services to fans and the surrounding community.

Its headquarters are located in Suite 300 in the China Basin Landing building in San Francisco.[4]

Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel A - it is puzzlement.  This also reminds me of organizations I ask to define their core values and then they list  honesty and integrity.  Well I hope so!

Roy Kelley Thank you for your research and posting thereof.  I am aware of their services and history.  I just do not think that the two words go together...dignity or treating people with dignity is a differentiator---it is like honesty and integrity. A

Hi Alexandra,

We have Dignity Healthcare in AZ and I see a lot of commercials for it. The commercials fit the name and I never gave it much thought.

So, on another note, my doctor's office was called Choices Healthcare and then bought out by another doctor who renamed it Humanity Healthcare.  Both of those are a puzzlement to me! ;-), as I think about it now.

When I moved to Sedona, I asked for referrals and this one seemed to be the best option. I never really thought about it from a marketing aspect until this post!

Once you are inside the doors, you are looking at services offered, professionalism, qualifications, etc.

But, on another level, sometimes I have a hard time remembering the name.

It is a puzzlement, but so many companies that should be showing dignity and respect to their clients do not.  I am in the midst of that right now.  You will probably see a blog about it soon.  When you say it or name your company after it, you better excel at it.

I can understand the puzzlement and confusion But I feel that branding with this title implies trust.  I can understand why they would want to convey that.  Best,  Kathy

Kathy Schowe I understand your point, but should trust be the price od admission for medicare or any business.  Does that mean that trust is an extra bonus that differentiates them, like the trustworthy real estate agent?  A

Interestingly enough, I have had similar thoughts about the "Dignity Health" brand.  To me, the healthcare industry as a whole gives thoughts (if not hopes) that we will be treated with dignity and concern.

HI Alexandra... the first thing I thought of when I saw "puzzlement" was The King & I before I got to the part of your post that featured Yul Brynner. Loved that movie... loved that song. And I agree... 'tis a puzzlement about the name "Dignity Health."

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 Very few companies really think things through, they react to whatever the buzz of the day is. It is also odd to use and archaic word.  A

I could never tell how old Yull Bruner  was; but he was a fine actor. I can see your point with the word dignity Alexandra.

Happy Tuesday to you and thanks Ron and Alexandra Seigel

Hi Ron and Alexandra- when I saw "puzzlement" in your title I immediately thought of The King & I. I'm not sure what the word Dignity signifies when used as part of the name of the business. and because it's confusing maybe I'll have to wait and see.
