Remembering Common Sense

By
Real Estate Agent WV0026375

TreeToday we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

  • Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
  • Why the early bird gets the worm;
  • Life isn't always fair,
  • And maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student, but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses, and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death,

  • by his parents, Truth, and Trust,
  • by his wife, Discretion,
  • by his daughter, Responsibility,
  • and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 5 stepbrothers;

  1. I Know My Rights
  2. I Want It Now
  3. Not my fault
  4. I'm A Victim
  5. Pay me for Doing Nothing

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

I received this in an email and was told it was an Obituary printed in the London Times. I hope you enjoyed remembering common sense. I did!

Good morning Rebecca Gaujot, Realtor® -  this pretty much sums it up.  Common sense means I am responsible and if it is to be it is up to me.

This sounds like my dad.  He was a common sense proponent with little tolerance for those without it.

Rebecca, quite the obituary.  I'm taking the side of the glass half full and agree with Kat that the lapse of Common Sense is temporary, the stepbrothers influence will be temporary.

Oh, there are SO many examples of his demise. One of my favorites is people signing up to do a job with certain responsibilities and certain pay - then immediately joining a strike to have responsibilities lessened and pay increased.

I don't think he's quite dead and buried yet, but he sure could use a lot more support from those who still believe in him.

The liberal progressives, politicians, media, educators and misinformed people living in America have persuaded and convinced many Americans of the utopia that awaits them by accepting their ideology and dependence on government entitlements rather than freedom and independence using common sense to achieve their goals and objectives and live a lifestyle unencumbered by rules and regulations.

The chaos created with the Covid 19 pandemic and the rules and regulations we had to adhere provided all Americans a glimpse of totalitarianism and our loss of freedom, which IMO, was enlightening because it became clear that going back to common sense was a much better alternative than having the government dictate our lifestyle and restricted freedoms.

So, on the contrary, the pandemic provided a much needed wake up call to all Americans that common sense still prevails as we move forward to an economic recovery for ourselves and all Americans. Within the next 6 months, we'll know if common sense will prevail or as you posted, the passing of common sense. I'm optimistic, are you?

Good morning, Rebecca... what a terrific post. As I've often said "common sense is an oxymoron... as it's really not very common at all."

Rebecca Gaujot, Realtor® - I read this obituary long ago and at the time, it was just something to read. To re-read it today cut through like a knife. Today, I would agree entirely with Kimo Jarrett and there are days I want to stick my head outside and roar like a lion. When I think about my family members who served our country, previous veterans who I helped buy and sell, and when I have my own pity party remembering days of Vietnam and what the impact of life after Nam did to me and my spouse I just shiver all over. I know he's rolling in his grave and he is is the company of much greater numbers than those in his platoon. Freedom is NOT free. I cannot understand how illegal immigrants and stupid politicians are taking away the very fabric of our being. There are days when I had to swallow the vomit in my throat just to remain calm and not create a scene. A lady is conditioned to be a lady but I can still feel the nails in the cross of all who sacrificed their lives for Americans to have their freedom. I think about people who came from communist countries like my grandparents and others like my husband who was born and never had a mother or a father to raise and accept him, or adopted parents, yet served with valor for this country, including those here on ActiveRain who served and also lived in a communist country who knows and understand the value of not having to be subservient to socialism and dictatorship like Endre Barath, Jr. . Why I just want to spit on those that makes my skin crawl who are making up these stupid arguments in politics and convincing their peers (who never served) and spreading their vicious lies to students in universities or even worse, professors teaching garbage and wiping out real history, erasing the truth and corrupting the minds of others, using race and you know what I mean as their calling card. Okay, I have to stop and scream out loud in the silence of my breaking heart.

Thank you for sharing this. It is so true. Have not been able to find the original. Please let me know when it was originally posted.  One of my neighbors who is a professor said, that history repeats itself. Guess the same thing is true for common sense. May love prevail!

 Hi Janice Zaltman - I am not sure how to find the original of this letter on Common Sense. It was sent to me in an email. I agree that history repeats itself all the way to the Biblical times.
