Memorial Day: a day to remember those who gave the Ultimate Sacrifice for our freedom

www.endrebarath.com

Over the years I have often written about this Day. Sadly, too many  used to think it was just an excuse to barbeque in the back yard or on the balconies. Those who could not tell the difference between Veterans’ Day and Memorial Day really amazed me. So, with that said, let me quote  Congressman James Garfield  aka future President of the United States:

"If silence is ever golden, it must be beside the graves of fifteen-thousand men, whose lives were more significant than speech, and whose death was a poem the music of which can never be sung."

 www.endrebarath.com

Did you know this small historical detail that in May 1868 (three years following the end of the Civil War) Maj. Gen. John A. Logan (who was the head of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union vets) declared that the holiday should be observed at the end of May. He chose the date in part because it did not fall on the same day as the anniversary of any battle.  Some people thought that he chose that date because flowers would be blooming all around America.

So with that said if you can drop by a Cemetery and place a flower on one or any of the grave stones that show the person buried there was a Soldier that gave the ultimate sacrifice to defend our freedom.

Just on a side note I find it a bit sad and ironic that we are “sheltering in place” on Memorial Day.

In light of the fact that this many US Soldiers gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

World War I (1917-1918)

116,516

World War II (1941-1946)

405,399

Korean War (1950-1953)

36,574

Vietnam Conflict (1964-1973)

58,220

Persian Gulf War (1990-1991)

2,586

Operation Enduring Freedom (2001-2014)

2,349

Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2010)

4,418

Operation New Dawn (2007-2011)

74

Operation Inherent Resolve [CJTF-OIR] (2014-present)

93

Operation Freedom's Sentinel (2014-present)

90

The above numbers are from Statistica

So with that said let's remember and honor those Soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Wishing you a safe and healthy life and I look forward to your comments.

Endre Barath, Jr. - Once again you bring people back into focus for why this date is set aside and the meaning behind its purpose.

Thanks for the clarification, Endre.   Too many people don't know the difference between Armed Forces Day, Veterans Day, and Memorial Day.

   Some comments for another time:

President James Garfield was a staunch opponent of a National Bank.  He was assassinated after four months into office; said assassination was most likely ordered by the House of Rothschild.  Other presidents who openly opposed a National Bank/Federal Reserve Bank were Lincoln, William McKinley, and John F. Kennedy.  All were assassinated.  Andrew Jackson vetoed the charter for the Bank of The United States; he narrowly avoided an assassination attempt (is President Trump virtue signaling the Globalist Bankers, with the portrait of President Andrew Jackson hanging in The Oval Office today?).

"Shelter in place", and the current pandemic hoax:  America has been conquered, without a shot being fired.  It is appalling to watch people blindly obey The Government.  What happened to The Home of the Brave and the Land of the Free?

I was with my son yesterday and he lost several friends in Iraq, but one very special friend and he set us up to do a roll call memorial, I saw how hard it was for him as we listened to Taps at the end.

It makes me angry that Memorial Day has in past years become just the start of the summer - and permission to wear white shoes - rather than a day to remember our countrymen who died in battle for our collective freedom.

Thank you for your post. The meaning of Memorial Day is lost among many. Posts like this help spotlight the real reason we have this day.

I never heard that Garfield quote before. Thank you for sharing.

Good morning Endre Barath, Jr. - I am glad this was featured and so sorry I missed it yesterday.  Our town used to do it on the 30th so that it would not be confused with a long weekend.  It was done in front of the American Legion.

There are many Americans who have never visited a cemetery on Memorial Day or Veteran's Day which is truly sad.

When you see hundreds or thousands of American flags standing at attention at grave sites saluting all veterans, especially those who gave their life during conflicts, you'll realize how Blessed we are as a nation because of our veterans who fought to provide us our Liberty and Freedom.

God Bless our nation's warriors everyday as well as Memorial Day and Veteran's Day.
