The Amish Had It Right All Along

Yes, I'm Content with MY Lifestyle!

Well, I just took a long motorcycle ride through the heart of "Amish Country" here in Central Ohio, and after getting to see a close up look at their lifestyle, I'm inclined to believe that they might have had it right the whole time. Let me explain:

I saw farms and fields being tended to by hard working honest folks, with nothing more than a couple horses and a plow. I saw women in traditional Amish dresses weeding, gardening, and yes... mowing the lawn. I saw businesses such as Sewing shops, candle shops, furniture makers, sawmills, bed and breakfasts, cheese and jerky stores, Amish restaurants, featuring downhome style cooking, and a sundry of traditional crafts stores. Their transportation? Mainly horse and buggy, or wagon cart, some bicycles, some riding on horse or mule backs, and yes.. even a fair amout of walkers. And, of course they grow (or raise) their own food.

Seems to me, that this peace-loving community will be largely unaffected by the current oil debacle, and their lifestyle, (and prices) will go unscathed. Their life is basically continuing the way it always has for over a hundred years. The biggest thing that has changed for them in this self-sufficient community, is having to put up with a much larger influx of us tourists and curiosity seekers, and having to occasionally life-flight one of their own to the nearest big city hospital because one of the "tourists" was not paying attention when flying down these country roads and hit a horse and buggy.  (A tragic reality).

So there you have it... an independent community that thrives, and gets along just fine in an otherwise confused and uncertain world. I think I'm envious.

If you get the chance, you should try to go and experience a community like this. It has a way of bringing reality in to clear focus, and also is a great stress reliever.

I think the home prices in and around Amish country will be going up soon.

Great values and ethics from most Amish. We have a local that makes all of his furniture by hand. He can custom anything you are dreaming!

The Amish still have a lot of "core values" and skillsets that have been forgotten or abandoned by modern societies, but I believe are still relevant. Perhaps they should open a school, or hold a seminar to teach the rest of us what values are really most important.

Kevin - Sounds like you may have been really close to Knox County on your bike ride.  It is so beautiful here especially this time of the year.

Sam,

I think it was mainly Holmes county, but I'm not sure.

Do you think maybe the Amish sit around their table of fresh food, and have a little chuckle about  "others"...

Interesting post!  I hope all is well in Ohio!

They got it right the first time.  Self suffiency never hurt anybody!  Seem we need to get this story to our politicians!

Kevin, funny you should do this blog today.  My sweetie and I watched the movie "Saing Sarah Cain" last night.  Not really a very "good" movie, but interesting story about the Amish.

I am sure the Amish life is "hard" if you think of it in terms of physical work, and what it takes to accomplish their goals. But on the other hand it has endured, and I'm sure most of them will tell you it is more than worth the sacrifices.

Well, it's good to know that we have a business model when we all have to return to self sufficiency!

You know Marie, that may sound funny, but probably has a ring of truth to it.

Nice summary. The simple life is what they want and obvarious gives them their basic needs. I think many people right now would like to get back to the simple life to relieve everyday stress that we have put on ourself.

Have seed -will plant. Have rain -will grow. Have food -will live. .  . Have faith and everything will fall into place. This is what my pappy use to tell us. I think he was pretty wise pappy.

Kevin, I fear that any mass return to "self-sufficiency" would likely look more like Mad Max or Beyond Thunderdome than the idyllic Amish.  Every "life style" requires some compromises and giving up of something.  Personally having lived off the land for a few years in the late 60's and 70's, while extremely worthwile, was not as "simple" as it seemed.  I think we tend to place meaning where there isn't any sometimes, and miss the opportunities all around us.  It is kind of like the old saying "you can never go home."  If one isn't "home" where one is---maybe one's eyes are closed---or one's mind is closed.

The 'simple life" certainly has it's charm and appeal, but I'm sure if most of us were to actually attempt to convert to that lifestyle, we would find it much more difficult than we imagined, (and probably impossible for most of us). Finding peace and contentment wherever you are seem like the best solution for most of us.

Loved the post Kevin, and the idylic look at the "simple life". How wonderfully they keep their places. I too think, when visiting "how much simpler life might be in this style community". Certainly a much simpler life at first blush and most definately a slower pace. No PHONES, TV, COMPUTER, or ANSWERING SERVICE, but I think, how would I do business??? As we all know these folk pay dearly for their desire and right to be different. They pay with hard work, persistence and personal sacrifice. While I enjoy my visits to the Amish country I am not certain I would truly desire to live that lifestyle. I think Charles brings a valid point to bear with his comments (thoughtful) and may I add....BLOOM WHERE YOU ARE PLANTED. Be the best you can be at what you do, be appreciative of life lived by all, but be especially grateful for the life that you have and where you are.

Blessings

Very insightful post Michael.... and words to live by... "BLOOM WHERE YOU ARE PLANTED".

However, I think I would REALLY ENJOY about a month with no cell phones, TV, or computer.

We have not experienced the wild roller coaster ride of Realestate in Western West Virginia and so I have been slammed all spring and there does not appear to be any relief in site. I had hoped to be doing just five inspections per week but if you say no to  realtor because you don't want more work then you'll likely have no work.....

We have so much opportunty where we find ourselves on a day to day basis to help others, to contribute to society, to really make a difference in someone else's life. When I travel I always think what it might be like to live someplace else, doing something else. But when I get home...I AM HOME, Im where can and am making a difference. I am doing what God in HIs wisdom has given me the ability to do. I am blest and pray that you all are as well. Sometimes we have to take a step back and look at the big picture.

Blessings
