Copyright WARNING - This Applies to Re-Blogs Too
I think that this is a very important blog and I reposting for others that may have missed it.
Copyright WARNING - This Applies to Re-Blogs Too
If you remember Lenn Harley, you'll remember her steadfast determination to keep us on our toes when it comes to copyrighting. If someone else took the photo or created the graphic you MUST have WRITTEN permission to utilize it. PERIOD. No ifs ands or buts! Seriously, there are NO exceptions to this rule and that includes re-bloggers!
A few examples would be -
- Photos & Graphics - Did you obtain written permission to use ANYTHING that you right-clicked and saved to your computer? If you did, you must also POST that in your blog - that you obtained permission AND you must give credit to the website owner or Pinterest Board owner from which you found the graphic or photo AND that you have written permission.
- Keeping Current Matters (KCM) - Often misused - give credit to our friends there when you utilize their material. This applies to any & all other paid-writing service as well.
- Infographics - the exact same thing - be sure you give credit if you didn't create them yourself.
*NOTE: You can 'give credit' but, without written permission to use the photo, graphic, infographic OR content, it is STILL copyright infringement. Your, "credit to" means absolutely nothing without actually having permission.
It is fine for members to give credit from which the images come but, don't forget that even the written portion of the post, if copied, must be credited to the original author. This also needs to be noted when asked when you are posting the article/photo/graphic, etc. on ActiveRain. Selecting that you have permission when you do not is a breach in our ToS and you can be asked to leave the community as a result of 'lying' (and, yes, that's what it is) when you say that you have permission to use someone elses content.
Video embeds are absolutely fine to use - the original authors have to allow users to embed directly on the sites. Should they decide they don't want others using their videos, they simply have to turn off the permission and the video will no longer be live on anyone's site who used the embed code.
That said, be 100% sure that if you're re-blogging a members' post, you know that the contents are original. Otherwise, you could also be liable should the owner of the graphic, photo or written contents sue for copyright infringement. So, be careful out there folks!
