This novel idea also keeps donations flowing into the zoo, which is vital to maintaining the zoo.  The animals need to continue eating. Staff is needed to care for the animals.

Routine maintenance continues.  The only thing missing during this tie of COVID -19 are the visitors.  Now the Zoo has a solution!


What else do I need to know about Cruise The Phoenix Zoo 2020?

 Social Distancing

Cruise the Zoo is a great way to enjoy the Phoenix Zoo while maintaining social distancing.  For the event, all visitors are required to stay in their vehicles.  Cars, trucks, and motorcycles are permitted (no bicycles).

Visitors may have the windows rolled down or convertibles with the top down. Masks are not required for the visitors. There will be a limit of 450 vehicles per day. visitors are not allowed out of their vehicles.


Zoo Tickets

Tickets for the Cruise the Zoo event are available for online purchase only.

May Times

Vehicles can line up beginning at 8 a.m.

The last vehicle must be in line at 1 p.m.

$50 per car (restrictions apply | FAQs)

$65 per car (restrictions apply | FAQs)


June - August

This event will be available the first  Thursday - Monday in June, July & August. The hours will be limited to 7 a.m. – noon, with all cars needing to be in line by 11 a.m.

When will the zoo ReOpen?


The Phoenix Zoo will reopen for the public to stroll the park on Jun 15, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 Virus, the Zoo will be taking any special precautions, including:

  • Limited capacity -  2500 visitors per day
  • Hours will be from 7 AM - 12N
  • All tickets must be purchased online by the day prior to your visit
  • Only credit or debit cards will be accepted, in addition to Google and Apple Pay
  • Jungle Java, Safari Snacks, and Crossroads Café (formerly known as Cavern Café) will be open for food service. For now, there is no indoor concession seating available.
  • Masks are optional for guests
  • Zoom employees will wear masks
  • Follow the directional signs on the ground
  • There will be 50 hand sanitizing stations throughout the park
  • Restrooms will be opened with aggressive cleaning schedules

Will Zoo Lights be available for 2020?

As of now, the exact dates for the Phoenix Zoo Lights have not been published.  While the staff often starts working on hanging the Zoo lights in July, the current COVID-19 situation has caused zoo staff to refocus their properties.  The staff has implemented the Cruise the Zoo event for folks to enjoy the zoo while generating revenue for the zoo.  Stay tuned for updates on the 2020 Zoo Lights1

What a clever idea to bring the zoo to people, who may very well be pleased to get out and see something different than their four walls and maintain some funding sources.

Yes Nick, the animals still need food and care.  I haven't done the Cruise the Zoo yet but several friends have and really enjoyed it!.  Much cooler in your vehicle with our Phoenix heat!
