Does the snake come with the house?

By
Real Estate Agent with Thompson Company, REALTORS® MD594797

Just another day in the exciting life of a REALTOR®! This was a feedback I never saw coming!

Imagine the look on my face when I read the feedback that had just come in on a hot new listing: "My buyers loved loved loved the house, but for the snake." My smile quickly turned into a big question mark! Snake? What snake? And oh no.. we have 6 more showings today!

Before my imagination went wild (fueled by an encounter with a rattle snake a few years ago), I called the showing agent to quickly get to the bottom of it. What kind of snake are we talking? Size? And where did they see her? Or him? Inside? At the door? Patio? I had so many questions! The house came with a beautiful yard, and a wooded area - can't blame a snake for wanting to live there, too! Although I am no herpetologist but the snake turned out to be harmless, and a baby of a garden variety. My seller took it with humor - after the initial confusion.

Does the snake come with the house?A wildlife expert was called in that same evening, found the snake, and relocated her to a safe place... outside, far, far away from my listing!

The snake most definitely would not come with this house!

No animals or humans were harmed in the eviction of the intruder. Showings resumed without another incidence, and the property was under contract shortly thereafter!

Just another day in the exciting life of a REALTOR® :)

Hello Andrea - that's an interesting story.  A well-told one too.  Can't say I recall any similar experiences but "exciting" news and real estate seem to go together.

If one lives in an area where snakes come around, one better be prepared to deal with it, haha.

It never is Mike Cooper, GRI, and that is why I love this business so much! This house was just a few minutes from the DC line.. definitely not an everyday encounter here.

Thank you Michael Jacobs! I've had my share of strange encounters, surprise and happy endings, too. But the question Does the snake comes with the house? was definitely a first.

I had a similar experience - an empty house, a pool, and a toad the size of Jabba the Hut from Star Wars and a snake who sunned himself on the storm entrance to the basement - the owners had names for both of the creatures since they were frequent visitors - not every prospective buyer felt so kindly!

Years ago I found a baby snake in my basement after some major sewer line work. I screamed (like a girl) and one of my neighbor's came to my rescue  And then there was this one - very unusual sighting - of a rattle snake. But that was on top of a mountain! That is all for snake encounters in my world Brian England, you probably see a lot more than we do!

They named them? That is too funny Lise Howe - it takes a special kind of person - and client - to take it with humor. I wonder if the buyers ended up evicting these two, or arranged to live with them?

Andrea Bedard You just brought back some fond memories of my house in Owings Mills. My son, about age 3 at the time, swore the Black Racer under the front porch was a python. But he dearly loved the little frog in the front yard, tame enough that it would routinely let my son cradle it in his hands. And I still feel guilty about moving the painted turtle from the front yard to the back yard - I was saving it from being right in the middle of some construction, not realizing I was removing it from its territory and quite possibly hopelessly confusing it. I am so glad to hear that my little post send you down memory lane Lauren Williams, CPO, CVO. My children are always saving little creatures, too, carefully stepping over caterpillars, or helping a baby turtle cross the path. When I told them about the snake the first thing they wanted to know if it was still alive! Yes, yes, very much so, just not in our listing

It's illegal to own snakes as a pet in Hawaii but there are two species of snakes roaming Maui and the big island of Hawaii. That's my second reason for living on Oahu and the first is Leonard's Bakery on Kapahulu in Kaimuki. Oahu, no ka oui.

I had a listing a few years ago and had a kinda sorta experience.  When the agent showing the vacant house called me I immediately called the seller.  The reaction?  Oh you found it!  Turns out when they moved the PET snake had escaped!!!  It was not a little one!!!

Real estate is an adventure, I always say.    I just had to update the confidential agent remarks in the MLS  for one of my  land listings, because a buyer saw a snake.      Congrats on getting your post in the daily featured e-mail!

Leonard's Bakery sounds like an excellent reason for living on Oahu, and a delicious one Kimo Jarrett I've only made it to the Big Island, once, many years ago, and would have loved to visit Oahu. One of these days I shall make it, I'll be sure to stop by Leonard's Bakery!

Susan McCall, Helping with smiles and care! Oh my ...! Sounds like that snake would have come with the house, had it not been discovered. I'm really glad that "our" snake was only a small one that somehow had found its way inside.

It sure is an adventure M.C. Dwyer - and for the most part an exciting and enjoyable one! Thankfully we located our intruder that same day, and got an all clear from the expert.

And, thank you very much! I had no idea about the featured email - although I've been subscribed for many years, it has been many years since those have landed in my inbox!

Hi Andrea:

It's certainly an issue that can come up from time to time! Some will not be happy, others might not care.

I was off to show a property to a buyer a few years ago and there was a huge snake in the yard. When she arrived it was clear this was an issue for her. And how can you guarantee if you get rid of one that there aren't others nearby, if it's a big issue for a buyer?

Jeff
