Happy Independence Day, or as it is more commonly known, Happy 4th of July - the 244th year of America’s Independence.
I write this Observations from a Beverly Hills Realtor's perspective with mixed emotions and trepidations. We in the U.S. celebrate our founders great visions of creating Freedom and Equality for all. I can’t help but ask in what direction are we heading? Will we celebrate the 245th 4th of July confident that everything is heading in the right direction?
I ask these questions as I witness statues of our founding fathers defaced, our history being systematically erased by politicians, activists, and the media. I am concerned and saddened because this reminds me of my days living in Communist Hungary. Those in power were removing statues of previous leaders publishing new history books every year. They were also the source for the media; hence they controlled the message being the ones in power. What are these violent protests accomplishing? Who is behind them? (Please note that I am referencing the violent protests, not the peaceful protests). I think we can all agree that not all of the statues depicted across the U.S. represent what would be considered model citizens of today. But destroying them does not make the past disappear.
With all of this said and with my personal past experience, I am not so confident that the current economic shutdowns in the United States are necessarily going to stop the Coronavirus; I can’t help but see the parallels of my past and think about a power grab by ambitious politicians. Authoritative figures from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have been giving mixed and conflicting information by the day, the week and at times the hour.
In January, Dr. Anthony Fauci (Director of the National Institute of Allergy, and Infectious Disease) in a radio interview with John Catsimatidis (owner of the largest grocery store chain in Manhattan and radio host) said about the coronavirus outbreak in China:
“…it is not something that the American public needs to worry about or be frightened about, because we have ways of preparing and screening people coming in...” (reference my post of link not working will repost when working, a bit contrarian to Dr. Fauci’s point.)
If you are not familiar with John Catsimatidis, he is a legal immigrant from Greece who became a self-made billionaire.
Why are they sending mixed messages? They are bureaucrats. Instead of focusing on being prepared for a Pandemic, they focused on protecting their fiefdoms. Hence the true blame falls on the bureaucrats of the government. This bureaucracy has been developing and growing since the late 1950’s. Being a student of history, I feel confident in saying this.
So, as we approach the 244th year of our Independence, I keep wondering when will politicians realize that the most important aspect of the current situation is to end the shutdowns and restart the economy safely, and as soon as possible. Do they you know that during the Great Depression this country had the highest suicide rate? Are they aware that keeping people and business shut down may very well have worse ramification? In other words, the cure should not be worse than the disease.
What did the politicians and infectious disease experts accomplish until now? They managed to scare every person to the point when someone coughs, sneezes paranoia is setting in from not only from the person who experiences this, but from loved ones, nearby friends, and stranger as well. The focus has consistently been on the number of deaths rather than the number of people who have been affected and survived the virus.
What are politicians thinking by defunding Police Departments? I would love to live in a society that is like my days at the United States Military Academy. We did not have locks on our dorm doors, and we had an honor system. Our motto was: Duty, Honor, Country! Sadly, in the “real world” that’s now how it is and many factors do require police protection. I am not so sure that budget diverting and lowering the number of good cops on the force is the right solution. As I see it, there will be less police protection and slower response time (it’s already slow) in a critical situation.
I also wonder why and how are people selling fireworks on the streets of Los Angeles and on the internet. Ironically, sales started in April and have continued throughout the Sheltering in Place order. Fireworks are illegal in Los Angeles and neighboring communities. These are the same people who are blasting off the pyrotechnics since the middle of April but do nothing but complain about how bad this country is. So what is there to celebrate with illegal fireworks? It terrifies wildlife and pets in our homes, veterans with PTSD or people in general who are already scared, depressed and on edge given the past 4 months of COVID lockdown.
In closing I hope politicians will come to their senses and get back to what they were elected to do by the people who voted for them to have such luxurious jobs. It is time for them to look out for the interests of the people who elected them.
Now with that said, I wish you and yours a happy and safe Fourth of July holiday.
Wishing you a safe and healthy life and I look forward to your comments.
