Planning a trip to Maui?  Don't take the Hana Highway!

Almost everyone who comes to Maui as a visitor used to be encouraged to take the "road to Hana" for a once in a lifetime experience. It's famous for the 52 or so single lane bridges, stunning vistas, tropical jungle and white knuckle hair-pin curves.  But that was then and this is now...

First of all, you may have to pass through the National Guard checkpoint at Twin Falls, where they'll ask you what your business is.  Are you driving to Hana?  Is it absolutely necessary?  If you're driving a Mustang or Jeep, it's probably not that important that you proceed.

If you decide to continue on your journey, be prepared to encounter lots of opposition, and not many smiling faces like in the old days.

You might find this guy near the start of the road, asking you nicely to turn around.

And when you get to the village of Kailua you'll see many signs telling you to turn around.  It might be a good idea to do that.

Residents of Hana are hoping you get the message and don't bother driving all the way to Hana just so you can say you did.  Tourism is a big part of the economy here on Maui, but some folks would prefer tourists to stay away a little bit longer, until we know how to stay safe from this virus that's going around.

So, see you later!

Hi Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089 - I have about 52 weeks of visiting Maui.  One of my favorite destinations.  We did that drive, way back in the day.  This was when the rental company would not insure any damage if you drove the far side. We never did it again!  I have talked with many locals who have certain, let us say, "feelings" about mainlanders coming to their island.  I understand their passion and respect how they feel. Unfortunately, not all tourists do. Now is not the time to take that drive. We canceled our pre-Easter visit this year. Next year is already on the books.  So hopefully...

Georgie,

And here from your title, I thought that they were fixing the road.  For all the times we have visited Maui (not as many as Sheri Sperry - MCNE® ) we have not driven the road to Hana.  So many of our friends told us to fly there, take the helicopter...etc.  And we passed.  Perhaps, next time we will.   Happy Sunday to you.  A

Georgie, I think people should stay around home right now, and try not to spread the virus.   I have always wanted to do the Road to Hana.

Aloha Georgie - I have taken the road of Hana twice.  Both times as a passenger where the driver was a first time visitor.  Thanks for the "warning".  Stay safe.  Keep healthy.

I have taken the road to Hana, but it was many years ago.  I would like to take it again, but it can wait for a better time!

Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089 - I'll bet you never imagined you'd be putting out a post like this. Those guys mean business! The funny thing is, if I were a resident there, I'd be happy that they are doing  a good job keeping away anyone who messes with the wrong State.

Be Safe!!!

You are safe from me!!!  LOL!

I can honestly say that I will never ever have to worry about the road to Hana. Or any road in the great state of Hawaii.

I have thousands upon thousands of gorgeous miles to drive in Nebraska and many times that in neighboring areas. So I am content hanging in this area.

P.S.  Nebraska is open for business if anyone needs somewhere to go!!
