TRADE YOUR BAD HABITS FOR GOOD ONES

By
Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

A great opportunity now exists to break some bad habits. I know in my own case just the shutdown eliminated a bad habit. It is now been quite a while and now the new successful habit has replaced it for good. Our success or failure is driven by our habits.

A bad habit can cause us to continue to do things that are non-productive or destructive. For example, you might have a habit of laying back and taking it easy. The result could be panic when you are up against a deadline. The result could be failure to meet the deadline or failure to achieve good results. All of this is the result of living in a comfort zone. That comfort zone exists for us because we are deriving satisfaction for our current habits. As an example, many people have trouble sticking to a diet because it is more comfortable to eat that extra “comfort food”. It would be more effective, of course, to consider the effect of that habit on health and weight loss and simply stop overeating and eating the wrong food. It would be more effective, but it certainly is not easy.

The medical profession has come up with a highly effective way to get people to change habits that are hurting their health. It is called “motivational interviewing” which focuses on the rewards of stopping a bad habit. You know that overeating or smoking, for example, are harmful but you just tell the doctor, yes, I know I will stop someday. Anyway, I really enjoy smoking, or I love eating. Besides, I will die sometime.

Here is the key. Replace the pleasure you get from the harmful habit and replace it with an equal of better pleasure you get from a new habit. What works with patients with chronic health problems can work for you. You won’t be able to pull out the old habit without replacing it with a new and perhaps better alternative. Our minds will not allow us to have a void. The void must be filled. It takes effort to recognize and come up with a suitable and better alternative. When you move out of your old comfort zone you will need to create a new comfort zone. Failure to do that will result in continual stress and that will pull you back into your old habit. That is what happens when people return to a bad habit. They still cling to the old attitude and comfort feeling.

Bad Habits

Now let’s use an example. Let’s say you know you should be networking and prospecting, but it is not comfortable. But you visualize the reward that more sales will bring—a better lifestyle, a vacation, and more peace of mind. With that in mind you can replace the comfort of inaction with the comfort of sales and prosperity. You must believe the reward and really want to achieve it.

Finally, divide your goals into bite size action steps. You can’t eat an elephant in one sitting. Action steps are relatively simple tasks—a telephone call, an appointment set, a letter written. These relatively simple tasks add up to the accomplishment of something more significant—the achievement of your goal and your coveted reward!  For a similar post on our website see ARE HARMFULL HABITS HOLDING YOU BACK?

It's funny that our dependence on ActiveRain is becoming so common. As for your blog post, my attitude is becoming better every day however it is still a work in progress and I am trying to get rid of many bad habits...

I hope you have a blessed week Grant Schneider

Grant this is very good advice, but all too often those bad habits feel way to comfortable, making them tough to break

Hi Grant Schneider - Another outstanding post to share.  Right before the pandemic, I started Nutri-Systems.  Though I have tried to watch what I ate in the past the reward from NS was 6 small meals and snacks. There is the reward of being able to eat something every 2 hours and eat as many veggies as you like!  It does work and I am glad I did it.

Grant,

You give a great formula for breaking a bad habit.  I am more my father's daughter.  One day as he was smoking, he decided that was it...he quit without looking back.  Ron is the same way and one day we both stopped drinking DietCoke...LOL A

Morning Grant.

I am going outside of my comfort zone next week.  It will be my first virtual meeting, instead of the (come to the office one), I'm so comfortable with.  We'll see how it goes

I enjoyed this post Grant.  The book Atomic Habits by James Clear made big difference for me.  Taught me a lot of tactics to help make it easier and lasting.

I love the medical analogy and tip, Grant! I think we all have some sort of bad habit and oftentimes, in the past as a nurse, I would hear, "I'm going to die anyway - I may as well die happy!" That mentality is SO frustrating!

I remember gaining weight about 15 years ago - couldn't figure out why as nothing had changed in my diet and I had no wonky lab results. During the interview, I shared that all I drank all day was one particular diet soda. He said, "That's it! That's what is causing your weight gain and your increased blood pressure." I had ½ of a 12-pack left in my fridge and I vowed to never buy any more. I started drinking water and in a couple of months, my weight was back to normal and my blood pressure had also returned to normal.

I TRULY had to convince myself that I enjoyed the water (I originally hated it!!) but, I promised myself I would not buy any more soda...and I never did! If you tell me something is impacting me medically, you only have to tell me once!! LOL

I have read SO much bad stuff about diet soda - way worse for you than even the sugary kind.

Grant loved your post, my first reaction is "WHY" I love the way I have my bad habits I am used to them and I am comfortable with them I have lived with them all my life:)) seriously the book I just read there was a sentence that resonated with me abou this very subject...

“…the endeavors that most modern men saw as urgent (such as appointments with bankers and the catching of trains), probably could have waited, while those they deemed frivolous (such as cups of tea and friendly chats) had deserved their immediate attention”  Amor Towles  " a gentleman in Moscow"

Clearly there is a message here...  instead of texting frivolously, answering emails obsessively, how about having a conversation with someone,Endre

I've not heard of motivational interviewing.  All the doctors I know get frustrated when they talk to patients about changing bad habits.  I agree that breaking down task into smaller bits makes it easier to do

Nothing like hanging on to a bad habit.  When you realize it's a bad habit, is when one will normally try to change that habit.  I read somewhere that it takes 21 days to form a habit, so I'm sure it has to take just as long to let go of that bad habit.

Great post, Grant Schneider. So many of the previous comments cover this nicely. From a personal standpoint, what has worked for me kicking bad habits is not declaring "I'll never do this again", or "I'm done with this forever". Never and forever are daunting words! The old cliche "one day (or step) at a time" is what really works. Just get through today, and tomorrow is a new day. In addition to that is desire. To make any change you have to want to do so. Anything less will most likely end in failure.

Dave - thanks for suggesting that.

Debe -  It is amazing.  I was actually hired to teach motivational interviewing beause of my coaching background.  It is used to target healthcare workers who work with people with cronic diseases.

Georgie - that is funny.

Martie - with two recommendations here I will have to read it.

Endre - now that really is something worth considering.

Lynn - glad that you found them helpful.

Mary - this technique was designed to train them.

Graziella - I have heard that but don't have any data to confirm.

Greg - it all starts with a first step.

Grant - love this post!  It's so easy to fall into a bad habit, but it's retraining your brain to get rid of a bad habit.  With the gyms closed I can't get to the gym so I've replaced biking with walking.  At least it clears my brain.  For a whle I wasn't doing anything and started to see those habits slipping!
