Wordless Wednesday...Like a Top Gun Flyby

Are you tired of reading about the bluebirds yet??? The babies in our bluebird box here should be ready to leave by the end of the week.

In the meantime, chicks from two (we think) previous broods from this year have been helping mom and dad feed the little babies. We’ve seen them take worms into the box. It’s so sweet.

Normally, the bluebirds don’t mind if Larry goes out to do a quick check on the box. It’s actually recommended.

However, this past week, every time Larry or I would get near the bluebird box or even the bird feeder, the older chicks start to divebomb us and do flybys like in Top Gun.

I asked Larry if he had ever done flybys or dive-bombed anyone when he flew F-4s. Maybe this was payback!

Of all the differnt type of birds that live in our neighborhood the bluejays are the most agressive.

Hi Kathy Streib - Fabulous!  The only time I have seen blue jays (not bluebirds) divebomb is hawks.  We get stealthy hawks sitting deep in the spruce trees.  Two days ago, my husband saw a fly-catcher flittering near their nest and he happened to see a garden snake slithering up the tree and got a broom to shake it off the branch. Your video is amazing!

Haha. I wonder what they were protecting. I watch them in my yard do this, but usually when a baby bird is near.

Kathy the only birds I have seen do that are blue-jays.  They not only diveboom, they actually attack you.

I enjoyed you updates on the bluebirds...and I have seen mocking birds dive bomb our cats during Spring.  Now I see crows surrounding hawks in flight when they get anywhere near their nests..and the raucous sounds are deafening!  A

I remember as a kid, there was a tiny hummingbird nest in an Orange tree on our property.  I loved watching the progression from eggs to young who learned to fly.

Hi Kathy Streib - that is really amazing.  I guess instinct rules and not being able to know that Larry is friend.

I never tire of hearing about your bluebirds. I am envious you have so many. I only ever had one pair at a time. I didn't know they would dive bomb though but when their protecting the babies I am sure they can get aggressive. Now barn swallows I knew did because they have done it to me before. Thank you for sharing.

I've been dive bombed by parent birds too. It's unnerving. Larry handles it better than I did. Thanks for the bluebird update. D

Wayne Martin we see it on occasion but it's interesting how the older siblings are attacking him.

Kat Palmiotti they're right there when he brings out the mealworms!!!

Donald Urschalitz I always thought they were but now that I've seen the bluebirds attack the squirrels, I have to wonder.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® Thanks!!!  I had to run out this afternoon to "shoo" off a hawk that was getting close. We have to keep an eye out for certain sparrows who are known for invading the nests.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty the bluebird box has 4 babies who are set to fledge in a few days.

Sharon Lee I wish you were somewhere that had bluebirds you could watch.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD when we first had the bluebird nests, I wouldn't let him go near it but after some reading we learned that if you check quickly, it's ok.
