Moving – How to Pack

Finding a new home can be exciting.  Leaving your old home is not always fun due to the work that must be done before leaving.  Following are some tips that may help simplify the process:

Get rid of stuff – First, need to identify items that you do not use.  If you pack these items, you are wasting time and money.  Recommend starting in the closet and then go room by room to get rid of your junk.  A good rule of thumb, if you have not use it in the past 12 months get rid of it.  After you have identified these items, either sell or donate the items to charity.  After getting rid of your stuff, give the house a good cleaning.  This way you will be unpacking dust-free items once you reach you new destination.

Boxes and paper – Need to figure-out how many types, and sizes of boxes you will need to pack your belongings.  This means taking an inventory of items you plan to move and determining the types of boxes needed.  When it comes to breakable items be sure not to overpack and use plenty of packing paper and bubble wrap.  When shopping for supplies, get plenty of packing paper, bubble wrap, and tape dispensers.

Packing plan – Define a packing plan and where you will temporarily store your packed boxes.  When defining plan, know how many days you have available to get the job done.  If short on time, you may need to hire helpers or solicit help from friends.

Label boxes – All boxes need to be label.  Identify each box with the room the box goes too, contents, and possibility use a numbering system that makes sense for the move.  The numbering of boxes could be used to develop a list of contents by box which would be helpful when unpacking.  If you end up with 1 or 2 miscellaneous boxes do not consider this the end of the world, because it probably will happen.

Professional movers – Sometimes it worth paying the extra charge to have a moving company put the finishing touches on the packing job.  They are better prepared to wrap bulky furniture, such as large flat screen TV, etc.

Extra box – Save an extra box or two, these may be needed to box odds and ends that were forgotten prior to locking and leaving.  These boxes could also be used to pack personal items you will need prior to the arrival of moving truck at your new home.
