We just returned from my Nephew's wedding on Friday and a family reunion on Saturday. They were both in Northern Utah, and I am glad that they were both this weekend. With gas prices continuing to rise and the time driving to Northern Utah is not what I thought that I wanted to do more than one weekend a year. It didn't take long for me to realize that what ever the cost was, it was money well spent.
You only get big occassions like weddings every so often, so it is important to be involved with them. It is easy to think that it is just another thing, that it is alright if you miss, but it isn't. These are events that only come along a few times during the course of one's life.
Family reunions, at least in my family, come along every year. I was reminded again this afternoon of the great memories that I shared not only with my siblings, but with my cousins as well as we grew up. My dad had 4 brothers and they were very close. I had forgottent until this afternoon, how often, in fact, nearly weekly that on Sunday afternoon, after church and family dinners one or another of my dad's brothers and their families would come over for a visit. It wasn't that we lived particularly close to each other, it was about 30 miles from our house to my uncle's house that was the furthest away.
I had forgotten those great visits and how now, we see each other once a year, that is if we can't think of a good enough excuse to not go. It saddened me, yet it recharged me at the same time. There are memories that although seemingly forgotten, that still linger in my mind reminding me of where I come from and how my parents raised us. It also recharged me to know that eventhough it has been years in many cases since I had seen my cousins, they still love me for who, not what I am. That is a great thing to know!
I guess it was appropriate to have had this reunion on Father's Day weekend, for that was what mattered the most to my father, was his family. I had forgotten that as my life has grown busier. So even though it may not result in a sale, it is a good thing to take the time to get reaquainted with your family. Who knows, something may change. Now they all know that Darcy and I are still in the Real Estate business, so there may be some referrals in the coming months, but if not, it was still a weekend well spent!
