Ask An Ambassador: Are You Refilling Your Glass?

By

There's a joke about the pessimist and optimist arguing about whether a glass is half empty or half full and the pragmatist walking up, grabbing the glass and knocking it back and proclaiming that was good!  And of course the rest of us realize the glass was always refillable with whatever we prefer.

Well right now some people are upset about the current state of ActiveRain.  Will it be what it was?  Will it be something different?  Will it even BE, period?

But how much energy and mindspace should we give to a situation that we can't truly influence or control?

No amount of writing about how awful it is that "management" hasn't communicated adequately is going to make your phone ring with buyer and seller calls.  The words are nonproductive and there's not a consumer out there that will give a flyin' flip about any internal problems on this site.  Either you're producing information they can use, or your competition is and the phone rings for the first person that provides what they need.

Here's the bottom line for me:  the site was down for about 12 hours and a month's worth of posts are TEMPORARILY AWOL.  Every claim by ActiveRain representatives since Day 1 is we expect to restore the lost. That's posts, comments, points, the whole enchilada.

So since Day 1 I've had a choice:

Get wrapped around the axle or get back to business.

For me, that's not even a decision.

Blogging here, even in its lessened SEO strength current state, still gets me results.

Some posts are more likely to have results than others, but enough hit the target that I can keep refilling my glass and get ActiveRain direct messages like the one I received this evening:

"I am recently widowed and I'm looking for a landominium in the Clermont County area if you think you can help me please let me know. Thanks".

THIS is exactly why I keep pushing ahead.  Maybe that message leads to a client, or maybe not.  But working my blog gave me another opportunity.  The glass refilled.  AGAIN.

It's your choice how to use the site.  Invest in yourself or burn any social capital you might have, your call.  Ultimately you're going to do what you're going to do, and I'm going to do what I'm going to do.  One leads to closing checks, the other way...well enjoy your bitter drink.

People have to know the glass is always refillable. So absolutely crucial to know.

I want to have personal responsibility for how I execute my business.  Glitches happen.

The latest crash and data loss does not bother me much. These things happen.

The time is taking to restore lost data does not bother me much, because I understand the complexity of the issue from a technical point of view.

What botters me, is the non-addressing of issues that been going on for months. For example:
- the issue with constant glitches when people attempt to post a blog. Haven't heard, even once, that AR has looked at the problem.
- the issue with people contacting customer service many times and never getting a response, thus, having to go to Q&A to ask for help.
- the issue with the alphabet spammer

I don't lose any sleep over it, but it's annoying that it goes on for so long.

Dario, from what I've heard, to say the background staff is lightly resourced is an understatement.  We live off of volunteers and borrowed resources.  Typically there have been 1-2 associates in the support section, and those are mainly for billing issues, spam killing, etc.  Developers are borrowed from elsewhere in Ben's business arena.

The glitches are irritating at times, but the load issues can typically be worked around.  I've always been able to post if I chose to, it won't necessarily be as convenient to do as we'd like though.

Liz and Bill Spear ,

I understand staff is limited, but AR being mainly a blogging platform, not addressing the persistent problem with posting blogs, is illogical.

It should be at the top of the list.
It's not much to ask to have a developer spend a day or two on it.

Hello Bill(and Liz too) - it's a choice isn't it?  Looking at the glass or doing something about it?  Buying(or selling) or complaining about market conditions?  There are those who address the situation and find the solution that works best for them(in the current situation with the information they have) and those who choose another direction.

And I've generally found there's always a solution.  I might not like the solution, but that's another choice to make.

Basically a home where you own from the studs in, and the HOA takes care of the exterior and the yard.  Can be attached or detached.

Is there water access with a dock the HOA takes care of too!

Hi,

In my case the glass is always half full.  We should be thankful that we have this outlet, yes, there are others, but as many issues as is going on, in the scheme of things I find it's not that big an issue overall.

It's all choice isn't it Bill!  Duh!!  How we choose to see everything is a choice and it's a good idea to choose wisely time and time again.  I certainly won't be wasting my time going crazy. In fact quite the opposite of that.  I've been very busy creating other stuff - all good - including a new FB page for BananaTudes!

BTW those guys behind the scene that are zapping those spammers etc are doing a really good job.  I appreciate all they've taken on, especially this past couple of months. Bravo to ARMS.

It's one of those "it is what it is" situations.  The new FB group should be a good addition to the social aspect of this community and provides and outlet if worst comes to worst here.

I'm glad ARMS team became more visible about a year ago.  At least we have another means of catching management's attention when there are issues.

This is the first really significant crash that lost info in 10 years.  I've been on a free account for most of that.  So while I don't like it, it's not a major life event for me.

Yep I am refilling as I have time and AR lets me, and write on my other blog too. Yep it's been frustrating but lots of things are. I get on when I have time and AR allows it!

I am too busy with life and business to worry too much, other than to lament the days when things were not quite no problematic with AR. We still have our connections and friendships, etc. Life definitely goes on!

No doubt, a LOT of connections have been made here.   So many places around the country that if I needed to place a referral that I wouldn't even need to think about it.  In some cases, I'd have TOO many good choices.

Very wise words. I find it pointless to get excited over things I can't control. I hope they get everything fixed - especially the email notices about comments. But hollering about it isn't going to make it happen faster.

Hi Liz and Bill - for me it is wasteful dump what is in the glass. Refill

And there are certainly times emptying and starting with another glass may be exactly what is needed.

It's a ridiculous waste of time to bemoan things and look for someone to blame. I sure appreciate that we are still afloat here at this point. And, I take it a day at a time. When it's slow, or down, I just take my attention elsewhere and vow to try again.  This morning, things are working well.

Over our time here, we've seen better and we've seen worse.  As long as this place continues to be open AND meets my needs, I'll be here.  Maybe not as much as the old days, but everything changes.
