Active Rain...Why I Fully Support the Future of Active Rain!

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Mike McCann - Broker, Mach1 Realty Farmland Broker-Auctioneer Serving Rural Nebraska

Active rain is an awesome site and is going to get even better!

How can I make such a claim?  Because I heard it from the owners mouth!!

This is a simple looking is meant to be.  No special bolded awesome pictures or my usual goofy jokes.

This is serious business about the future of Active Rain.  And despite the outward appearance...AR is headed in the right direction. My comments below were posted on another blog in response to someone questioning the integrity and efforts of the owner of Active Rain, Ben Kinney.

Please read this entire comment:

I was on the Zoom meeting with Ben and others and it was eye opening to say the least.

I believe rather than speculate on future changes, we should wait until Ben gives us more details.

This was an initial zoom meeting and I am so glad and honored to have been on the meeting.

It was fantastic in understanding the overwhelming nature of both the current site...the issues of June blogs...other site issues such as slow periods, etc. and why some changes were made in the past because of previous owners, contracts, etc.

I want to be clear on this and I will mention it elsewhere as well.  No one on AR that was not on that Zoom meeting can understand the passion and fire Ben has for AR. It is sincere and he was upset and embarrassed about June.

The June info has been found...but like a car that was stolen and stripped down... many things on the now found June blogs need to be fixed before those lost items can be brought back online...and that takes time and money.

I can also say I seriously doubt that there is anyone on this AR site that understands seo, backlinks, and software on this platform any better than Ben.   If you do...I am surprised you are not chatting with him privately.

In a nutshell...AR was built on a platform that needed to be updated annually and there were many years prior to Ben's ownership that this was not maintenance.  Now many of those needed updates cannot be accomplished because you simply can't put a 2020 update on a 2015 product...

Here is an analogy:   A 2008 automobile or cell phone cannot support 2019 or 2020 technology.  Just as a newer vehicle or cellphone cannot run on old software....Neither can the Rail (sp) software or initial code that AR was written on many year ago support current software needs. That is one major issue.

Another issue is when various previous owners sold AR they stripped some of the software programs and backlink or backside data that was not supposed to be taken, thus creating huge back side issues and gaps for the system.

Another thing people need to is expensive to have each and every link on a website live.  Someone has to pay.  It appears that Ben's other profitable businesses are paying to support AR.

Example: My personal has roughly 100 total pages linked together and it costs me about $75.00/month to have them all live and working.  I have personally on AR over 600 blog post links.  Let's say I am average on AR for the top 1000 users.  That is 600,000 links where that data is stored for those 1,000 members. Now we all know we each have about 10 pages minimum x 300,000 members. That is 3,000,000 links. Huge expense.

My son is a software engineer and writes code. He is based in Lincoln, NE. He explained to me many months ago that a large number of web based businesses and sites all around the world are outdated because of the base software they were built on is old.  Many of these are big name companies and websites. They were adequate for the time, however...Time and technology and user requirements have overwhelmed and overloaded those older platforms...but the cost to totally start from scratch and rebuild is immense. Thus one of the reasons many websites have glitches, etc.

Ben wants to hire roughly 4 people for AR and the expense for these programmers, etc is not cheap...

At the Zoom meeting, ideas were shared and Ben said he would love to come back and be the speaker again in the next month and gives us updates.  I am excited about that.

FOR NOW...I will stand with Ben and give him my support.  I am asking all members of AR that want the site to not only stay active but become also stand with him.

Thanks for reading... Mike

Hi Thomas J. Nelson, Realtor e-Pro, CRS, RCS-D, Vets I know I left out some things that were discussed but am glad I was able to be on the zoom and also to meet others that I have talked with in type but not virtual face to face.

Endre Barath, Jr. Ben is looking for input as well as suggestions, etc... and I am sure would welcome yours. Perhaps you have been conversing with him on the backside.

Wayne Martin Thanks for checking in and sharing your thoughts.  Yes, I think one thing all of us agree on is we want AR to succeed.

Thank you guys for always checking in on my many of my blogs. I really do appreciate it!  Have a great weekend!!

Hello Mike - no one(in their right mind) would ever claim I was tech-savvy I am merely an observer and a member of this site for over ten years who has "seen/heard" much over that time.  While I appreciate your optimism, like Endre Barath, Jr.  commented "time will tell".

Hi Michael Jacobs I wish Endre and you would have been on that Zoom meeting.  I changed my entire schedule so that I could be.  I have been here since sometime prior to 2010 on AR.  I get it and was where you are before the Zoom meeting.

I am glad you would rather wait and see.  The difference is I am way over on the optimistic side while you and Endre appear to be a bit more on the pessimistic side.  I hope I get to flip you guys to the other side!!    Have a great weekend!!

Michael Jacobs and Endre with 3.6+ and 3.3 million points each (without the June 2020 discount) should not be labeled pessimistic. That pointage represents a lot of blog posts, time, effort. We all want to see AR thrive, Michael, Endre included.

The site is live. Still breathing. Under attack from alien spam  software,  armed with missing and outdated code. Many witnessed the history of events, the what happened to cause the decline. Most of us have websites. We all know they get outdated and first hand the same problems that knock us off line or diminish performance just on a smaller scale.

"I hope I can get to flip you guys to the other side" is division. Us, Them. Good, Bad. Easy does it to keep the AR blog united. Cautious, hopeful, realistic but united. We're all on the same side or you would not be reading this comment.

The losing all the June blogging work and chances bigger chunks of data could happen. The fix is not a quick McIver one  with duct tape, bailing twine, hay wire. And all those broken 404 urls does not put fire in your belly to jump right in and go whole hog blogging on just AR. Unless expensive actions not just words happen. It is not an easy fix. Go Ben. We all wait opportunistically.

There was a time when AR was all we had blogging back in 2007, 2008 and beyond here on the blue and gold Active Rain. The outages helped cause redirection of blogging efforts. Slowly shifting to safe private platforms that we all could directly  manage and keep the SEO strong, the site working round the clock. The ZOOM meetings are worthwhile because communication two way happens.

Mike McCann - Nebraska Farm Land Broker  I can not speak for  Michael Jacobs   just to be clear I know him personally and with that said I speak for my self I am not and never have been a Pessimist... I would not have jumped from Airplanes and Helicopters if I was a pessimist. I would not have went to Ranger School if I was a pessimist... I would not have went to West Point if I was a pessimist... I am the ultimate optimist....  It comes to a point where Time Will Tell... talk is cheap Actions Speak Louder.... FYI I am a Realist with strong Optimistic Attitude, otherwise I would not be selling Land in the greater Los Angeles area where it takes 18 months to three years to get approvals to build a home...Endre

I wonder if anyone knows an example of an older site that had existing content migrated to a new site. I'm sure they would have lost the SEO value of the long-tail back links.

This is the exhaustive (and probably expensive) challenge that AR faces. I can't question the intentions of a person who is willing to lose money and appears to be up for the challenge.

Thanks for the update. I lost nothing in June as I have not posted in a very long time. I come back from time to time probably for many of the same reasons that most of us long-timers do. It's a fun place to visit and re-visit.

And I hope it can be rescued but recognize the challenges in being able to do that. This is a good recap for those of us who did not happen to participate in the Zoom meeting.

Let’s not rehash old news. The founders of AR had one vision; when Ben bought the company, he had another. But let’s face it, Ben’s empire has expanded, while AR has been treated as the red-headed stepchild. Ben need answer only to himself. He’s earned it. For most us us long-timers, we’ve been enjoying a free product for a lot of years.

The nature of real estate and lead harvesting has changed since Ben acquired AR. If we all want to see changes (improvements), then maybe some of us should put our money where our (typing hands) are. I’m sure there are a few members out in the Rain getting one hell of a bang for their (free) buck.

Hi Mike McCann - Nebraska Farm Land Broker

I thank you for your input. I was unable to attend the ZOOM meeting. Wanted to but... When I worked in the corporate world installing and servicing corporate telephone systems we would occasionally experience catastrophic failures. Many times we would have to go back to the original configuration then try to reassemble the machine to its configuration, add the patches and sometimes hand input changes that existed at the time of the failure. It wasn't pretty and it was time-consuming and frustrating for all concerned.

I am sure Active Rain powers to be will get the machine reassembled AND in better shape than it was. Until that time I will remain patient and continue to contribute in the same manner I had been. I enjoy the comradeship of the thousands of AR members. The points are secondary and simply bragging rights, imho. The reason for points is to spur participation but there is more than edification than points. To lose AR would be like losing many, many friends all at once. We cannot allow that to happen.

For those AR members stiving for the 500,000 point mark, the sting for you is worse than it is for me. But let that go! In life, there are times when things go way off stride from what we intended. So, what do we do? We get back up and push forward, sometimes recovering ground we had already covered.

Let's encourage the AR folks. I appreciate this forum for what it is.

As an optimist, I'm hopeful they will be able to improve their systems in a timely manner. I've had experience with another company in a similar situation and unfortunately it is a complicated technical hurdel which is likely to take time.  Software and system changes rarly happen quickly and their are bound to be bumps in the road along the way.
