Active rain is an awesome site and is going to get even better!
How can I make such a claim? Because I heard it from the owners mouth!!
This is a simple looking blog...it is meant to be. No frills...no special bolded highlights...no awesome pictures or my usual goofy jokes.
This is serious business about the future of Active Rain. And despite the outward appearance...AR is headed in the right direction. My comments below were posted on another blog in response to someone questioning the integrity and efforts of the owner of Active Rain, Ben Kinney.
Please read this entire comment:
I was on the Zoom meeting with Ben and others and it was eye opening to say the least.
I believe rather than speculate on future changes, we should wait until Ben gives us more details.
This was an initial zoom meeting and I am so glad and honored to have been on the meeting.
It was fantastic in understanding the overwhelming nature of both the current site...the issues of June blogs...other site issues such as slow periods, etc. and why some changes were made in the past because of previous owners, contracts, etc.
I want to be clear on this and I will mention it elsewhere as well. No one on AR that was not on that Zoom meeting can understand the passion and fire Ben has for AR. It is sincere and he was upset and embarrassed about June.
The June info has been found...but like a car that was stolen and stripped down... many things on the now found June blogs need to be fixed before those lost items can be brought back online...and that takes time and money.
I can also say I seriously doubt that there is anyone on this AR site that understands seo, backlinks, and software on this platform any better than Ben. If you do...I am surprised you are not chatting with him privately.
In a nutshell...AR was built on a platform that needed to be updated annually and there were many years prior to Ben's ownership that this was not done...software maintenance. Now many of those needed updates cannot be accomplished because you simply can't put a 2020 update on a 2015 product...
Here is an analogy: A 2008 automobile or cell phone cannot support 2019 or 2020 technology. Just as a newer vehicle or cellphone cannot run on old software....Neither can the Rail (sp) software or initial code that AR was written on many year ago support current software needs. That is one major issue.
Another issue is when various previous owners sold AR they stripped some of the software programs and backlink or backside data that was not supposed to be taken, thus creating huge back side issues and gaps for the system.
Another thing people need to understand...it is expensive to have each and every link on a website live. Someone has to pay. It appears that Ben's other profitable businesses are paying to support AR.
Example: My personal website...www.mach1ag.com has roughly 100 total pages linked together and it costs me about $75.00/month to have them all live and working. I have personally on AR over 600 blog post links. Let's say I am average on AR for the top 1000 users. That is 600,000 links where that data is stored for those 1,000 members. Now we all know we each have about 10 pages minimum x 300,000 members. That is 3,000,000 links. Huge expense.
My son is a software engineer and writes code. He is based in Lincoln, NE. He explained to me many months ago that a large number of web based businesses and sites all around the world are outdated because of the base software they were built on is old. Many of these are big name companies and websites. They were adequate for the time, however...Time and technology and user requirements have overwhelmed and overloaded those older platforms...but the cost to totally start from scratch and rebuild is immense. Thus one of the reasons many websites have glitches, etc.
Ben wants to hire roughly 4 people for AR and the expense for these programmers, etc is not cheap...
At the Zoom meeting, ideas were shared and Ben said he would love to come back and be the speaker again in the next month and gives us updates. I am excited about that.
FOR NOW...I will stand with Ben and give him my support. I am asking all members of AR that want the site to not only stay active but become better...to also stand with him.
Thanks for reading... Mike
