William Redington was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan back in 1913. He attended Lowell High School before continuing his education as Stanford University. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Stanford, before transferring to MIT, where he received his Master of Science degree in 1936.
It was while he was attending MIT, he became friends with David, they started discussing forming a company which they did in 1939. It was a toss of the coin that decided which of their last names would go first (more on that in a moment). They incorporated in 1947 and tendered an initial public offering in 1957.
A young Steve Jobs (age12) called William requesting parts for a frequency counter he was building. William was impressed and offered him a summer job assembling frequency counters.
Now for the rest of the story. While you may not recognize William maybe you recognize his last name Hewlett, his partner was David Packard. Of course, the company they founded was Hewlett-Packard. It is alive and doing well, as those of you who own a HP knows.
