Multi-Task Social Networks, Im's & E-mail Accounts With Digsby

With Social Networking on the Rise and plenty of new sites out there to get yourself more exposure and more in the mix with all the online Buzz, it seem that it's harder to keep up with all your Social Networks than joining one.

Combination Clients

I recently began my crusade by joining as many Social Networks and Social Media out there.  The problem is I rarely have time to jump from site to site to check update, to do updates and basically maintain the networks.

The main contenders are Instant Message Clients like Yahoo Messenger, Aim, AOL, MSN and Google Talk. I have about 3 Screen names each with a different service for different use.

  • I tried using combination clients like Trillian and Pidgin to have all my accounts in one client, but I still have to switch clients and websites when checking my other networks.
  • Next up on my list are my Social Networks like Myspace and Facebook.  I usually just set my alerts for direct messages and comments sent directly to my e-mail so I don't have to keep checking on these sites.
  • Next on my list is Twitter, Tumblr and Brightkite.  These guys are more time consuming and harder to maintain with constant alerts and quick updates.  I just recently began investing in these networks but I already can tell I need help organizing these networks soon.
  • I tried using Twittermail & Twhirl to keep up with Twitter so when I get new replies it sends them directly to my E-mail which is fine because Myspace, Facebook and Activerain still sends alerts that way.

This didn't solve the problem with the real time updates though and I don't like clogging up my phone with texts.  So I tried using Twhirl, which is a cool client but still I wanted more consolidation.

  • Last is my e-mails, I have about 4 different e-mail addresses due to different types of e-mail I like to receive.

So as you can see I do alot of bouncing around and sometimes can be very time consuming.

I found the perfect client for ALL of my accounts into one client.  The client is fairly new just being only a few months old and is still improving.

The Power Of Digsby                (http://www.digsby.com)

  • Digsby Revolutionizes the Instant Messaging clients by adding all your IM accounts into one interface.  Beautiful interface that shows all your IM accounts and can even sync contacts that are duplicates.  This replaced Trillian for me.
  • Digsby combines the Social Networks underneath your Buddy List in a tabbed view format.  The area shows your social networks with the corresponding icons that shows all your alerts, messages and updates.  Just tab over the area to go tour inbox, messages, comments, bulletins etc.  Again beautiful interface.
  • Digsby Also attaches Twitter to the Social Network Area under your buddylist, this is pretty cool because just tab over the icon and a Twhirl like interface pops up, managing your replies and updates.  Very handy, this replaced Twhirl.
  • Finally Add as many e-mail accounts to Digsby, again in the same area under your Buddy List is the e-mail icons, will tell you new mail and alerts.

The Pop-Ups

The Best and Most important thing Digsby does is it allows small pop-ups to appear and disappear in the lower left hand corner of your screen making you multi-task better without interrupting your work

If it's an important alert like new mail your waiting for you can tab quickly over the alert, which will allow you to view the message and can quickly delete or respond to go back to what your were doing before.

The Verdict

Overall I am very happy with my new toy and I believe I just shaved 1-2 hours of my Social Media Time everyday.

Let's face it, time is money and we should spend more time with our family, friends, clients and less time playing catch up on all our Social Media.

Hope this device helps you become just a tad bit organized, thoughts and feedback encouraged! What do you think?

Justin, You just saved me money because you saved me time. Thanks for the cool tip about Digsby. I knew there had to be a tool like that out in 2.0 world, just wasn't sure what it was, and was time consumed by all the networks to spend too much time looking. I will be sure to check this one out.

Hi Justin, That's some feature you've got there?  Have you found any negatives about it?  What are they?

Thanks for sharing, time is $$$!  Thanks,

Missy - Well I was hunting for a combination client forever and I just kept stumbling into seperate clients, Im glad I found a client that incorporated all.  I did find something close but its a website called pageonce.com

Bill - Thanks for stopping by!

Maureen - right now its only for the desktop, its main feature is the IM client who knows manbe in the future mobile apps might arise.

No Name - keep in mind this client is still in Beta and it is still a client application like AIM and etc, is bit much on the memory about 25k but compare it to Firefox browser which runs at 180k its still pretty small.

They did just released an update to the new build which will even lower the memory usage and leaks.  might want to wait to download the new build next week since I know how troublesome old computers are http://blog.digsby.com/archives/44#comment-3775

Marlene - I know I am the same way I try not to mess with any social network sites during work, that is the reason why I am responding so late at night, do apologize people.  But to comment on investing your time, it is good exposure and free networking/referrals, you never know what you might catch out there, so it's not a complete wast of time but is surely not more important than family and other priorities, just a suggestion

Chuck - Thanks for the book mark!

Eleanor - Twitter is very hard to keep up but I have had a lot of resources solved on there and even talked to a few potential clients on there, its the nature of the network game, get yourself out there and see what sticks

Bob and Carolin - Tools are very important :)

Rebecca - Thats why I posted this to help anyone looking to shave some time :)  The 2.0 world out there can be scary but shouldn't be ignored, thanks for commenting.

Yvette - Well the only negatives I found is that there are still a ton more of Social Network sites I like to see added but they are working on all the additions very soon, again they are still very new and in beta but they are definitely a gold mine!!  Another thing I have found is memory leaks when you have alot of applications open, this is being fixed in the next build next week.  This company does new builds and updates almost every week which is a good thing!!

Justin, I can't keep up with one, let alone several. You are Superman, for sure! I will have to check this out. Many of my friends from AR use Twitter, and this could help manage, it sounds like. Thanks again!

Justin,

Have you tried flock.com?  I have heard good things about it.  This tool basically consolidates all your social media activity into one browser dashboard.

@Elizabeth - Lol wouldn't call myself Superman but Im glad I could help a tad bit in time management, thanks fo commenting!

@Lane - Exactly, they do work and hopefully this can help you in any way

@Roland -It can be very cumbersome...thanks for stopping by!

@Michael - you just hit it right on the money, we all are very busy but it shouldn't stop us from gaining new exposure and networks, thanks for stopping by!

@Josef - I seen flock.com looks like a cool social media browser like stumble upon, with Digsby though it is a client that consolidates all my Ims,Networks and E-mail into a client which is what I wanted.  Thanks for sharing the link though!

Justin,

I have to admit that I am a little confused about all those Social Networking out there. There are too many and I don't have that much time to spend blogging, checking the emails... etc.

I tried Plaxo, Linden and MyBlogBlog... and few others I forgot. Always had people inviting me to join. But I failed back and eventually gave up all together. I guess life is passing me by...

Justin- So... are you using digsby to consolidate your emails as well? And (if so)... does it allow you to respond through the single client?

@Arina - I can understand your confusion but your a great blog writer and the social networks are much simpler to use believe it or not.  I atleast sign up to a lot of networks but proactively maintain just my main 3 like facebook, myspace, and linkedin.  Twitter imo is a microblogger so I don't count that.

Well if you need any help I can always lend some advice and tips, thanks for stopping by!

@Chuck - Yeah I loaded my e-mail accounts on there too, its pretty cool when theres a new message it pops up in the client and can reply etc via the client as well :)  Saves time imo.

Justin, just letting you know that I signed up for this new "toy."  My only thought would be for them to enable me to add LinkedIn, etc. Only allowed me to add Face Book, Twitter and My Space. Am I missing something? Love how it lets me know when new messages are added.
