Tuesday Tip...That Darn 504

It would be wonderful if when this is posted the 504 popups that we’ve been getting are a thing of the past.

However, if that is not the case, this is what I (and others) have been doing to prevent punching or screaming expletives at your screen.

504 Gateway Time-out

I won’t sugarcoat it...it’s been difficult (that’s putting it mildly) making comments as well as responding to comments made on the site. And unless you’ve not been paying attention, we’ve had many members 504 gatewaymissing in action.

I can’t address what’s being done to remedy the situation...when I was in college my peers walked around with boxes of keypunch cards and had to vie for time on the computer.

But, I do know that things are being done. From what I understand, the task is monumental.

If you’re still of a mind to comment, here’s a workaround. (don’t you hate that word?!)

After you comment on a post and the infamous  504 pops up, wait and press the Refresh button on your browser.

Count to 20...do your nails...check your email...grab a cup of coffee...whatever...but the page should refresh to the post with your comment!

I owe a lot to this community so I’m going to still be here commenting and refreshing. Hope to see you here too.

BTW-Join us to at the Tuesday ZOOM gathering!!!!!

Kathy-Most of the time that does work. I started this before the dreaded 504 gateway as my older tablet gives me problems with posting all on its own but it is lighter and easier to hold up to comment than my slightly heavier 10.1 Things we do to enjoy online camaraderie.

You are special enough that I will put up with a couple of 504's to comment on your post.  Hopefully, we find out something good on today's zoom call.

Kathy,

I have a bunch of work arounds, one of which is to have two browsers open.  However, I am miffed as to why we are seeing very little progress in fixing this platform.  It has been a while, and although patience is not one of my strong suits, I would think that we could have had at least one part working...All the best to you all on the ZOOM call.  A

I do understand the hope (on the part of the owners) for everyone to continue to use the platform. No upgrades likely equals no service in the future. Kinda sad

Hi Kathy Streib, sometimes, I get the 504 messages after commenting but when I go back, my comment is there. Like you, I've gained so much from ActiveRain and not going anywhere.

Well, that's a work-around I hadn't thought to try. Today I'm in with my Chrome browser, something that hasn't worked for a number of weeks. I've been commenting successfully (although it's slow) and haven't yet met with the 504.

I might try writing a blog post tomorrow! (My time's up for today.)

Hi Donald Urschalitz for me...the less time here means more time to do other things. I'm ok, with that.

Wayne Martin Exactly!  Although I learned that through fishing!

Kat Palmiotti it's a pain but it does work.

Myrl Jeffcoat I usually have several windows open on my browser so while one is loading I can do something else.

Kathy I guess we still have to wait a little longer before the 504 Error issue goes away.

Hi Kathy Streib - I have found that refreshing the post works sometimes.  I see that many of us are using more than one tab to comment.  I often wonder if that makes it harder on the servers.  I only have a certain amount of time to visit on AR and if it is timing out, I usually have to do something else.

Peter den Boer you would typically see it if you comment on someone's post or respond to comments on your post.

Jeffrey Richman darn, it would have been a lot more interesting if it had some kind of special meaning or was a secret code.

Matthew Klinowski, PA that's exactly what I do. At least I don't feel as if I'm wasting time.

Grant Schneider that's a smart thing to do. I also have my iPad handy.

Sharon Lee it's like a car...I hate it when they don't work.

Brian England that is so sweet of you!!!!!   It was fun seeing you today while you were volunteering.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel it's frustrating to be sure. I think the old is too messed up and finding the right person to "right the ship" is not easy.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty I believe they're working on it with plans to make it better.

Beth Atalay refreshing almost always works for me. And I'll be patient. Thank you for the feature in Bananatude!

Hi Lottie Kendall I loved seeing you today on the ZOOM Call!!!!!   Glad that refreshing the browser worked

George Souto LOL...I was hoping that my post would be irrelevant today.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® it may but I think it's the only way any of us would be on the site.

Kathy Streib = Time is so precious these days. This evening I cleared out my browers several times in a row and there were no other applications open. I kept receiving "504.' Yes! it's annoying.

Morning Kathy.

I missed it again.  Just busy as usual.  Someone needs to record it, so those who missed it can look at it later.  504 is alive and doing well

Kathy, it has been frustrating, and find myself spending less and less time here.    Thanks for the workaround.

I discovered it quite by accident. And yes, when I'm trying to comment in AR, I do multi-task. :) Makes the wait easier. Ha.
