APPALACHIAN TRAIL IN THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS

By
Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

Last week we drove down to our Florida home by way of the Shenandoah Valley through western Virginia and into Tennessee.  I haven't been down this way since I went with my family as a teenager.  It is a beautiful ride. We stayed in Pigeon Forge Tennessee within the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

I was here last Wednesday and I had to think about Kat Palmiotti when I was here.  You may know the Kat lived in New York and loved hiking the Appalachian Trail which runs from Georgia through Maine including New York.

This part of the trail is one of the most challenging as far as terrain as it runs along the Tennessee North Carolina Border.  The lean-to shelters built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the1930's include caging grates to keep campers protected from the bears.

We really could have stayed longer and have suggested that it be a destination for our Florida and New York Family to spend time together.

I hope people can find some time to enjoy the outdoors during the shutdown.  We took all precautions and had masks and others did too.

When I was younger always thought it might be cool to walk the Appalachian Trail, a little further than my camino and more rugged too. Have walked small portions of it with my kids when they were in scouting up in PA.

I love the Great Smoky Mountains and we would visit there every time we went back to Tennessee to visit family.

Endre - too bad we didn't have some more time to enjoy this beautiful region.

James - the town itself is quite an attraction.

Sheila and Larry - we camped when I was a teenager and were told by the rangers to put all food in the car.

Barbara - especially if you go camping.

Wayne - bring your grandson with you.

Nick - I did too from Water Gap to Wind Gap.

Brian - that is really cool.

Thanks for the mention, Grant! I would have loved to have been there - I like the sign (only 1972 more miles to go!).

Interesting tidbit about the caging grates to allow safe sleeping from bears. I hadn't ever heard of them (or seen them). Great idea!

Grant, this is a wonderful area, was there on vacation last September.   Not really "mountains" as I would say, and so different, but had a lot to offer.   I took a hike a couple places, and there signs saying there were bears in the area, but did not see any, thankfully.

Grant,

Thank you for sharing the Appalachian Trail with us.  It is someplace we have not been.  I will ask our dear friends/clients who have a home in the mountains of NC, and can see 4 states including Tennesee from their deck, how close they are to the trail!  A

How cool, Grant. Thanks for sharing this with us, and it did remind me of Kat too.  It sounds like you did your exploring with the necessary precautions. Won't it be great when we can fully experience all that life offers again?  Talk about not taking things for grated.

Hi Grant- I am fascinated by the Appalachian Trail and so happy that you and Phyllis took some time to see it. We were near the trail once and learned about the Trail Angels. Larry and I thought about volunteering to hand out drinks and snacks on weekends.

One of the main things I love about where I live is being less than two hours from the smokey mountains! Great way to unwind after a week at the office!
