Will Post COVID Training Return to IRL?

“IRL” = In Real Life

Maybe I’m just a cantankerous curmudgeon, but I miss learning with other people in the same REAL place.

For me, Virtual learning is less effective – less engaging – less “dimensional”.

We miss the real nuances of the “material” sometimes because it’s so easy for us multitask while “attending” virtual meetings/trainings. We don’t see “body language” other than facial expressions . . . or at all from those who choose to turn off video.

I’d venture to say that most people in virtual meetings are lucky to retain anything more than 50% focus on the information being disseminated.

The dimension I miss the most is the felt TENSION that we lose in a virtual space. In real life, we can actually INTERRUPT another participant to clarify or make a timely neglected point. In the virtual world, the moderator can (and most do) create an environment that negates any possibility of spontaneity . . . rather these fresh emergent ideas are relegated to the “chat” where they sit until the presenter takes a 10 minute breather to “respond” to these ideas which have hence become stale and somehow less important while parked in chat.

Will we “return to the REAL classroom” when the world re-opens?

I hope we will not have forgotten how to orchestrate a good, old fashioned, Spirited, dialog.

Having said all of that, I feel obligated to acknowledge a wonderful by-product of this Virtual environment . . . I’m witnessing people and families “Gathering Together” more frequently than we ever could have in pre-virtual times.

I think we’ll do just fine.

I suspect we will return to REAL classroom learning once the pandemic has taken it's last breath.  However, I think we have also learned that we can work from home, and learn from home as well.  For example, I've been using this time to ramp up more time learning Spanish using Duolingo.  I actually think I'm learning faster on-line, because when I reach a tough lesson, I can instantly repeat it, and then move on.  In a classroom environment, you might get left behind.  I love www.Duolingo.com by the way.  And, it's free!

Hi Barry- you make some interesting points. I do think that ZOOM and other platforms have helped all of us get through being physically distanced. It's not a perfect solution for everyone but it's been a big help.

Believe it or not, I'm not a big fan of most in-person learning because so much of the time is spent dilly-dallying. Waiting for late attendees, taking non-necessary breaks, going at the rate of the slowest person. I'd much rather take classes online!

That being said, I do miss in-person discussions without masks. I miss being able to freely go do whatever we want without restrictions. IRL might not return for a while, but I'm looking forward to that.

Hi Barry - these are all valid points.  I was somewhat more successful teaching my virtual class.  I required all video on and no one muted.  I used dual screen so that PowerPoint was on one screen and people were on the other.

I missed my instructors "mid year" class on Friday which was zoom.  Had I planned a day away from work I would have gone and scheduled my closings for a different day.... but the zoom meeting just didn't seem super important.

I also miss in person learning re: CE credits.  Schoolkids, no matter what the age, including college--are at a real disadvantage for the next several months, even a year, as they get so much more in social skills and new friendships besides learning.

Good question!  I'm teaching virtually in an hour and miss seeing agent's faces. I miss hearing their live questions so that everyone can gain more from the experience.  For now, we have "chat" and we can let them voice their questions, but no face with the question leaves seomthing out of the equation!

I was always too easily distracted by extraneous information in a classroom.  Online, you are focused on the question/problem and you strive for the correct answer. Frankly, I will never go back into a classroom and probably not even go to a meeting with a speaker--one that we can now download and view on our computers. Do I miss the interaction of people that I might meet at these events? Maybe, but I've done this for so long, that would not be enough to get me there. My time has become very valuable to me.
