Josephine Amanda Groves was born in Cowpens, South Carolina back in 1898 to John and Emma. Her father was a Methodist minister. She attended Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee earing a A.B. Degree in 1923. She continued her education attending the Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State College where she received her second Bachelor’s Degree.
She married Guerney in 1925. After graduation, she worked at the Bethlehem Center in Nashville, she was later hired as a field advisor in 1944 and retired in 1963. She died in 1988, she was 90.
What you may not know about Josephine Groves Holloway is that she was the first African-American to become a Girl Scout. She was honored by the Girl Scouts of the USA was the naming of Camp Holloway in 1955 and the “Hidden Heroine” award in 1976.
