All around the country, school is starting again. And this year, things look a bit different.

Parents are scrambling to be flexible and preparing to help teach in more ways than before. As a mom, I can say that it's all been very stressful. The uncertainty and overwhelm take their toll.

So, today, we're focusing on stress relief for parents in the upcoming months. Because regardless of what is outside of our control, we still have the ability to take good care of ourselves.

It's our one life, after all. It's worth the effort to make it a good one (even during a pandemic).

1. Plan Your Stress Relief Strategies

First, what are the activities that alleviate your stress? Make a list now! It's likely different for everyone, but you'll think of items such as working out, time in nature, reading, and quality time with friends.

Now, when will you do these things? Schedule them in a week ahead of time. Every day? Every Wednesday? Do them as often as you can, but above all, schedule them in. These are non-negotiable commitments with yourself, so treat them as such.

2. Bring in the Fun

Now that you've planned for your relaxation, let's add a little fun into your days! School may be stressful, but be sure to add adventurous activities with your family too. It will give you all a breath away from the grind and remind you that there's an outside world out there as well.

3. Take Learning Breaks (if at home)

As soon as your online schooling is set up, make sure that everyone has breaks built-in. Likely, mom and dad have work too, so be sure to plan for flexibility ahead of time. You'll all better adapt if there's space to relax and get everything else in that's needed.

4. Try New Relaxation Exercises

And finally, if you're feeling burnt out this fall, try something you've never done before.

If you enjoy yoga, try meditation.

If you love running, try a hiit workout

If reading makes you happy, start a journal.

Think about your interests and start a new habit that will benefit your mental state. You'll feel the rush of getting out of your comfort zone, plus find new strategies to keep your stress down.

In Conclusion

Parents are in a unique position this fall. Many are taking care of families, working, and schooling. But we also need to realize the value of self-care. Because more than ever, our kids need parents that are mental and physically capable of handling anything.

We can do it!
