On The Subject of History

Once Again

I am not sure I have posted about the subject of history.   Either way,  here it goes.  There are many quotes that relate to the subject and I like this one because it includes a word that I don’t recall previously seeing.  So that makes it memorable for me in a sea of quotes I often see.

No matter how carefully records are

kept and filed and computerized,

they grow fuzzy with time.

Stories grow by accretion.

Tales accumulate -- like dust.

The longer the time lapse,

the dustier the history --

until it generates into fables.

                                                     Issac Asimov

Although, I am not certain I agree with the quote in total but I am thankful for it because of the word accretion which is defined as a regular part of my vocabulary.  A quick trip to an online dictionary source tells me accretion is:

the process of growth or increase,

typically by the gradual accumulation

of layers or matter.

Hi Michael- it's always fun to learn a new word, History/memories are like a good soup or stew. You measure ingredients, stir it around and you have your dish. Put it in the freezer and over time everything intensifies. (I must be hungry this morning!)

Issac Asimov's quote rings so very true, Michael.  I often think folks get caught up in religious dogma which divides us, rather than uniting.  Yet, when you get to the root of most of it, there are similar "truths."  That alone, should unite us!

I do have a hard time with people who try to change history and make believe that some things didn't happen or when it doesn't fit ones narrative...

Back to pondering,

Happy Tuesday evening Michael Jacobs

Michael Jacobs - I had to read Issac Asimov's poem several times to feel the beat and his emotion. If he were alive and wrote more lines, much longer, more meat in between the lines, I think it could turn out to be a great Slam Poetry!

Myrl Jeffcoat - it doesn't seem to be such a novel concept, right?  Thanks for the highlight in the OFC group.  I appreciate it.

Grant Schneider - quite true.

Everything has a history, people, places and things, however, it's really not the history that is as important as the change that was created from the history.

Our planet is constantly evolving so, history is important  and today, the Woke morons have been duped to disregard history. Regardless, history is important in all aspects of our planet as we continuously evolve to improve our quality of life now and in the future.  Interesting post.

Hi Michael Jacobs - I have always been told that history is written and told from the perspective of the victors as was mentioned by Ron and Alexandra Seigel.  I think a true historian does the research and looks at all perspectives and tells the story including those perspectives.

Michael, some history does fade a bit.  Was talking with a past client the other day and they brought up some fun facts back 15 years when they bought.  We all had to laugh some more.
